ChatGPT not working? Is it down, or is it you?

November 2, 2026

First, the one-minute check: open status.openai.com. If it shows an incident, ChatGPT is down for everyone and nothing on your side will fix it; wait it out. If it shows green, the problem is local: most often a browser extension, a stale session, a VPN, or an app that needs updating. The causes below are in order of how often they turn out to be the one. If the work is due now, nixm works without an account and has no capacity queue.

Step one: is it down for everyone?

Open status.openai.com. It lists ChatGPT separately from the API, and an active incident shows at the top with a timestamp. Downdetector is the second opinion: a spike in reports in the last hour means an outage even if the status page has not caught up yet. If either says outage, stop troubleshooting. Nothing you do to your browser fixes OpenAI's servers; the fix is time. Incidents usually clear in under an hour, occasionally longer during launches.

If the status page is green, it is probably one of these

1. A browser extension is blocking it

Ad blockers, privacy extensions and some password managers interfere with the scripts ChatGPT loads. Open a private or incognito window, which runs without extensions, and try again. If it works there, disable extensions one at a time in your normal window until you find it.

2. A stale session

You are signed in, the page loads, nothing responds. Sign out, close the tab, sign back in. If that fails, clear site data for chatgpt.com (cookies and cached files for that site only, not your whole browser) and sign in again.

3. A VPN or network filter

Some VPN exit points are rate-limited or blocked, and some corporate and school networks block ChatGPT outright. Turn the VPN off, or switch to your phone's data for a minute, and see if it loads. If it does, the network was the problem.

4. The app needs updating

On a phone, an out-of-date app can stop working after a server-side change. Update it from the App Store or Play Store. If it is already current, force-quit it and reopen; if it still fails, delete and reinstall. On desktop, the same applies to the Mac and Windows apps.

5. Browser cache, or an old browser

ChatGPT not loading at all, a blank white page, or a spinner that never ends usually means a cached script that no longer matches the server. A hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac) forces a fresh load. Very old browser versions are not supported; update the browser.

6. You are over a limit

If ChatGPT loads but stops responding to you specifically, you may have hit a usage limit rather than a fault. Those have their own messages and their own pages: message limit, too many requests, at capacity, and conversation too long.

7. Account or region

Rarely, the account itself is the issue: a payment problem on a paid plan, a flagged account, or a region where the service is restricted. The sign-in error text usually says so. You can also test whether the service works at all for you by using ChatGPT without logging in; if that works and your account does not, the account is the problem.

What the error messages mean

  • Something went wrong: a generic failure with several causes, mostly on your side. The six causes and the fix for each.
  • Too many requests: rate-limited. What it counts and how long it lasts.
  • ChatGPT is at capacity: demand exceeds supply, paid users first. How long it lasts.
  • Network error mid-reply: the connection dropped while the answer was streaming. Refresh and ask it to continue; long answers are the most exposed.
  • Blank page, no error: cause 5 above.

ChatGPT not working on your phone specifically

If it works in a desktop browser and not in the app, it is the app: update, force-quit, reinstall, in that order. If it works on Wi-Fi and not on data (or the reverse), it is the network. If the app opens but the keyboard or voice input fails, check the app's permissions in your phone's settings.

What to use in the meantime

If the work is due now, keep a second door. The alternatives page covers the full set. nixm has no capacity queue and no hourly cap; you buy credits once, they never expire, and each message costs one. You can start without an account in the time it takes ChatGPT to refresh, and no transcript of what you type is kept.

What this tells you

That a tool used by hundreds of millions of people has peaks, incidents and launch days, and that a deadline which depends on one service is a deadline with no backup. The one-minute status check is the habit worth keeping.

frequently asked

Is ChatGPT down right now?

Check status.openai.com for an active incident and Downdetector for a spike in reports. If either shows a problem, it is down for everyone and the fix is to wait.

Why is ChatGPT not loading?

A blank page or endless spinner is usually a cached script. Hard refresh the page, try a private window to rule out extensions, and update the browser if it is old.

Why is ChatGPT not working on my phone?

Update the app, force-quit it, then reinstall if needed. If it works on Wi-Fi but not data or the reverse, the network is the cause.

Why does ChatGPT say something went wrong?

It is a generic error with several causes, most on your side: extensions, a stale session, a VPN, or a very long conversation. The dedicated page walks through each.

Does a VPN stop ChatGPT from working?

It can. Some exit points are blocked or rate-limited. Turn the VPN off and try again.

What can I use while ChatGPT is down?
