"Too many requests in 1 hour. Try again later." What it means, and what actually works

October 23, 2026

The message means you, or something sharing your connection or account, sent more requests than ChatGPT allows in a rolling window. It is a rate limit, not a ban. Free accounts hit it soonest; shared office or campus networks and browser extensions that poll ChatGPT hit it without you doing anything. It usually clears within the hour. What works: stop sending for a few minutes, close extensions that talk to ChatGPT, switch network if you are on a shared one, and if you cannot wait, use a tool with no hourly cap for the next hour's work.

What the message means

ChatGPT counts requests per account and per connection in a rolling window. Cross the line and every message returns this error until the window moves on. It is automatic and temporary; nothing is wrong with your account. The counter includes more than the messages you typed: regenerations, edits that re-send, a tab left open that keeps retrying, and any browser extension or app that calls ChatGPT on your behalf.

Why it hits you

  • Free tier. The window is tightest on free accounts, and busy hours tighten it further.
  • Shared network. An office, campus or library connection shares one public address; if fifty people use ChatGPT through it, the limit is shared too.
  • Extensions and scripts. Anything that polls ChatGPT in the background spends your allowance silently.
  • Retry loops. Hitting send repeatedly on a slow reply counts every time.

What to try, in order

  1. Stop for ten minutes. Do not keep sending; each attempt resets nothing and may extend the wait.
  2. Close other ChatGPT tabs and disable extensions that use it. Reload once.
  3. If you are on a shared network, switch to mobile data or a different connection; the limit may be the network's, not yours.
  4. If it persists past an hour with none of the above, sign out and in, or check the status page for an outage; "too many requests" is sometimes shown during one.

Does waiting fix it?

Almost always, within the hour. The exception is a shared network at a busy time, where the pool is exhausted continuously; there, switching connection is the only fix.

What the message tells you

That the product is metered by the hour and by the account, and that at the moment you most need it, the meter decides. If you cannot lose the hour, keep a second tool for exactly this case. nixm has no hourly cap and no queue tier: you buy credits once, they never expire, and each message costs one. You can start without an account, and no transcript of what you type is kept. The maximum-length error page covers the other wall long sessions hit.

frequently asked

Why does ChatGPT say too many requests in 1 hour?

You crossed a rolling rate limit, counted per account and per connection, including regenerations, open tabs and extensions. It is temporary.

How long does the ChatGPT too many requests error last?

Usually it clears within the hour. On a busy shared network it can persist until you change connection.

Does too many requests mean I am banned?

No. It is an automatic rate limit with no effect on your account beyond the wait.

Can a VPN fix too many requests on ChatGPT?

Switching network can help when the limit is tied to a shared connection. It does nothing for a per-account limit.

Why do I get too many requests when I barely used ChatGPT?

Something else is spending your allowance: a browser extension, an open tab retrying, or other people on the same network.

Is there an AI chat with no hourly limit?

nixm has no hourly cap or queue tier: credits are bought once, never expire, and each message costs one. You can start without an account.
