ChatGPT "Something went wrong": the six causes, and the fix for each

October 23, 2026

"Something went wrong" is ChatGPT's catch-all for six different failures: an outage on their side, a session that expired, a browser extension interfering, a network that dropped mid-reply, a conversation that has grown too large to load, or a reply blocked after it started. Thirty seconds of checking tells you which: if the status page shows an incident, wait; if a fresh incognito window works, it is your browser; if only one conversation fails, it is that conversation. The reply that died mid-sentence is usually recoverable with "continue".

One message, six causes

  1. An outage. The most common at scale. Check the status page; if there is an incident, nothing you do will help until it clears.
  2. An expired session. You have been signed in for a long time, or signed in elsewhere. Sign out and in.
  3. A browser extension. Ad blockers, privacy extensions and ChatGPT add-ons intercept requests. Open an incognito window with extensions off; if that works, the extension is the cause.
  4. A dropped network. The reply streams word by word; a hiccup mid-stream kills it. Reload and ask it to continue.
  5. A conversation too large to load. Very long threads fail to open or fail on every send. Start a new chat and paste the summary; the maximum-length page has the method.
  6. A reply blocked after it started. Content checks run on the output too; a reply that trips one is cut and shown as an error. Rephrase.

Thirty-second diagnosis

  • Status page shows an incident → cause 1, wait.
  • Works in incognito → cause 3, disable the extension.
  • Works in a new chat, fails in the old one → cause 5.
  • Fails only on one kind of question → cause 6.
  • Everything else → sign out and in, then reload.

Rescuing the half-finished reply

The partial text is usually still there. Reload, then send "continue from where you stopped" or paste the last line and ask for the rest. If the conversation itself will not open, the only rescue is memory and whatever you copied out.

What the error tells you

That your work lives in a session on someone else's server and goes away when that session, that tab or that incident does. Two habits help: copy anything you care about out as you go, and keep a second tool open for the hour when the first one is down. nixm is built around the first habit: a session distills to a small signal you can share by link, and nothing else is kept. It has no hourly cap and no queue tier, you can start without an account, and no transcript of what you type is kept.

frequently asked

What does something went wrong mean on ChatGPT?

A catch-all error for six failures: an outage, an expired session, a browser extension, a dropped network, a conversation too large to load, or a reply blocked after it started.

How do I fix something went wrong on ChatGPT?

Check the status page, try an incognito window with extensions off, sign out and in, then start a new chat if only one conversation fails.

Why does ChatGPT say something went wrong while generating a response?

The reply streams in pieces; a network hiccup or a content check mid-stream cuts it. Reload and ask it to continue, or rephrase.

Can I recover a ChatGPT reply that stopped halfway?

Usually. Reload and send continue from where you stopped, or paste the last line and ask for the rest.

Is something went wrong a problem with my account?

Rarely. It is almost always an outage, a session, an extension or the conversation size.

Is there an AI chat that does not lose my work when it errors?

nixm distills each session to a small signal you can share by link, has no hourly cap or queue tier, and can be started without an account. No transcript is kept.
