Can you use ChatGPT without logging in?

October 8, 2026

Yes. Per OpenAI, you can use ChatGPT at chatgpt.com before creating an account, in most supported countries but not yet in Europe, except the UK. Logged out, you get one conversation at a time, nothing is saved to a history, and the chat is gone when the session ends. No account is not the same as private, though: OpenAI says it uses chats to train its models by default, and logged out, the opt-out is a setting saved only in that browser. If you want no sign-up and no transcript kept, nixm starts without an account.

The short answer

Go to chatgpt.com and type. OpenAI made ChatGPT usable before creating an account, and its help center describes how that works today. Two caveats sit right at the top: logged-out access is not yet available in Europe, apart from the UK, and even where it is, OpenAI says some people may still be asked to log in before sending a message.

What works without an account

  • Chatting: you can ask questions and get answers straight away.
  • One conversation at a time: per OpenAI, starting a new chat makes the current one inaccessible.
  • The current session only: the chat stays available while you stay in that browser session. Leave, and you can't continue it.

OpenAI doesn't publish separate usage limits for logged-out use, and in practice you get a lighter version of the free plan.

What you lose

According to OpenAI's help center, these need an account:

  • Chat history: nothing is saved, so there is nothing to come back to tomorrow.
  • Exporting your data and sharing chats by link.
  • Custom instructions, which shape every answer to how you work.

For quick questions that is a fair trade. For anything you'll build on over several days, you will feel the missing history quickly.

Is logged-out ChatGPT private?

It is more private than a signed-in account in one way: the conversation isn't attached to your name or email, and it doesn't pile up in a history. But "no account" and "nothing kept" are different things.

  • Training is on by default. OpenAI's help center says: by default, it uses chats to train its models. Logged out, you can turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in settings.
  • The opt-out lives in your browser. OpenAI says the choice is saved in that browser and resets if you clear cookies or switch browser or device. A new laptop, a private window or a cookie cleanup puts you back on the default.
  • Your message still reaches OpenAI. No account means no history on your side. OpenAI's help pages don't spell out how long logged-out conversations are kept on its side.

If what you want is "nothing tied to me and nothing saved", logged-out ChatGPT covers the first half and leaves the second to policy. How long signed-in chats stay around is covered in how long ChatGPT keeps chat history, and the training question in whether ChatGPT is private.

Other AI chats that need no sign-up

Several assistants work without an account, and they differ in what happens next:

  • Duck.ai needs no account and proxies your requests to the model providers: is Duck.ai really private.
  • Brave Leo needs no account on the free tier and, per Brave, keeps nothing on its servers after the reply: is Brave Leo private.
  • Proton Lumo has a guest mode that Proton says is erased at the end of the session: is Lumo private.

They are compared side by side in AI chat with no sign-up.

No sign-up, and no transcript kept

nixm starts without an account: open it and seed a signal. It doesn't keep a transcript. A distilled log of the session stays with the signal for seven days, then dissolves, along with any images you uploaded. When you want to keep going past the first few messages, signing in is free and takes an email link, no password. It is a thinking space and a video studio rather than a ChatGPT replacement, so if you need a general assistant with every feature, logged-out ChatGPT is the quicker fit.

frequently asked

Can I use ChatGPT without an account?

Yes, in most supported countries. Per OpenAI, ChatGPT can be used at chatgpt.com before creating an account. Logged-out access is not yet available in Europe, except the UK, and some users may still be asked to log in.

Does ChatGPT save chats when you're logged out?

Not to a history. Per OpenAI, logged-out chats can't be saved, you get one conversation at a time, and the chat is gone when the session ends or you start a new one.

Does logged-out ChatGPT use my chats for training?

By default, yes: OpenAI says it uses chats to train its models by default. Logged out, you can turn off Improve the model for everyone in settings, but the choice is saved only in that browser.

Is using ChatGPT without an account anonymous?

Partly. The chat isn't tied to a name or email and isn't saved to a history, but your messages still go to OpenAI, and its help pages don't state how long logged-out conversations are kept.

What can't you do in ChatGPT without logging in?

Per OpenAI, saving chat history, exporting your data, sharing chats and custom instructions all need an account, and you can only have one conversation at a time.

Why is ChatGPT asking me to log in?

OpenAI says logged-out access is still rolling out by country, isn't available in Europe except the UK, and some users may be asked to log in before sending a message.
