Is Grok private? What SpaceXAI keeps, who can read it, and what X changes

September 25, 2026

Partly. Per SpaceXAI's own FAQ (the company formerly called xAI), your Grok conversations stay in your account for as long as you keep them. They can be used to train its models unless you turn off Improve the model, and authorised staff may review them. Private Chat, behind the ghost icon, keeps a conversation out of your history and out of training, and it is deleted within 30 days. Grok inside X runs under X's privacy policy instead. If you want a conversation that is never written down at all, that is what nixm is for.

First: which Grok are you using?

There are two, with two rulebooks. Grok on grok.com and in the Grok apps is run by SpaceXAI, the company formerly called xAI, under its own privacy policy. Grok inside X is governed by X's privacy policy and terms, with its own settings in X. SpaceXAI's policy says so directly. Everything below is about the grok.com and app version unless it says otherwise.

What Grok keeps, and for how long

SpaceXAI's consumer FAQ puts it in the user's hands: you can keep conversations in your account for as long as you wish. When you delete a conversation or your account, it can take up to 30 days to disappear from SpaceXAI's systems. The exceptions are conversations that were de-identified and disconnected from your account, and anything kept for safety, security or legal reasons. If you use Grok without logging in, nothing is kept for you to come back to after the session. That is not the same as nothing being kept, as the training section below shows.

Training: on unless you switch it off

SpaceXAI says it may use your prompts, searches, uploads and Grok's replies to train its models. You control it with a setting called Improve the model. In the app it is under Settings, then Data Controls; on grok.com it is under Settings, then Data. Turning it off means new conversations are not used for training, but two exceptions stay. Feedback you choose to send, like a rating on a reply, may still be used. And in some regions outside the EU and UK, if you use Grok without logging in, you have no option to opt out at all. SpaceXAI says it does not train on business and enterprise customers' content.

People can read some conversations

SpaceXAI's FAQ is plain on this. Automated classifiers scan usage for policy violations. A limited number of authorised staff may review conversations to improve the model, investigate security incidents and misuse, and meet legal obligations. The training switch controls the training pipeline; it is not described as a switch for that review. SpaceXAI's own advice is not to put personal or sensitive information into your questions.

Private Chat

Private Chat is Grok's equivalent of an incognito window. You start it from the ghost icon at the top right. SpaceXAI says a Private Chat does not appear in your history, is deleted from its systems within 30 days, and is not used for training. It is the right mode for anything you would not want in your history. It is still a conversation that passes through SpaceXAI's systems and sits there for up to a month.

Share links, and the 370,000 chats in Google

Grok's share button creates a public link to a conversation. In August 2025, Forbes reported that Google had indexed more than 370,000 shared Grok conversations. Some held medical questions, personal details and at least one password, and many users had not realised the links could end up in search. SpaceXAI's FAQ now warns that a publicly shared link may be indexed by search engines. It also lets you revoke every share link at grok.com/share-links. If you have ever shared a Grok chat, that page is worth a visit.

Grok on X, and your X data

Using Grok inside X brings in a separate policy, and separate opt-outs that live in X's own settings. The standalone app can also be personalised with your X data, through a setting called Personalize Grok using X that you can switch off. SpaceXAI says it does not sell your data or share it for advertising.

So is Grok private?

With training off, Private Chat for anything sensitive, no public share links and a habit of deleting, Grok's footprint comes down to about 30 days per conversation. Human review still applies to anything flagged. With default settings it is a stored, trainable record that staff may read. How it compares with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot is in what each AI chatbot keeps. If you came here for Grok's video features, the costs are in whether Grok can make videos.

The version with nothing to share by accident

Every control on this page manages a record after it exists. nixm starts from the other end. The conversation is never written to a database, so there is no history to review, nothing to train on and no transcript to leak through a share link. What remains of a session is a small signal that dissolves after seven days. It is a place to think out loud without leaving a trail.

frequently asked

Is Grok private?

Partly. Conversations stay in your account until you delete them, can be used for training unless you opt out, and may be reviewed by authorised SpaceXAI staff. Private Chat keeps a conversation out of history and training and deletes it within 30 days.

Does Grok train on my conversations?

Yes, unless you turn off Improve the model in Settings. That stops training on new conversations, but feedback you send may still be used, and logged-out users in some regions outside the EU and UK cannot opt out.

Does Grok save your conversations?

Yes. SpaceXAI says you can keep them for as long as you like. Deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days, unless kept for safety, security or legal reasons.

Do humans read Grok chats?

Some. SpaceXAI says a limited number of authorised personnel may review conversations to improve the model, investigate misuse and meet legal obligations.

Can Grok share links show up on Google?

They have. In August 2025 Forbes reported more than 370,000 shared Grok conversations indexed by Google. SpaceXAI now warns that public share links may be indexed, and you can revoke them at grok.com/share-links.

Is Grok on X different from the Grok app?

Yes. Grok inside X is governed by X's privacy policy and has its own opt-out settings in X. The Grok app and grok.com follow SpaceXAI's policy.

Can I try nixm without an account?

Yes. Open nixm.ai and seed a signal — no account needed, and the conversation is never written to a database.

try it now — no account, nothing stored. even the signal dissolves in seven days.
