Is Gemini private? What Google keeps, who reads it, and for how long

September 24, 2026

Not by default. Per Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, chats are saved to your account for 18 months unless you change it, are used to train Google's AI models, and a subset is read by human reviewers — and reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, disconnected from your account, even if you delete your activity. Turning Keep Activity off or using a temporary chat stops training, but Google still keeps each chat for 72 hours. If you want a conversation that is never written down at all, that is what nixm is for.

The short answer

Google is unusually explicit about Gemini, and its own privacy hub does most of the work here. The headline is a sentence Google itself puts in bold: do not enter confidential information you would not want a reviewer to see, or Google to use to improve its services. That warning exists because, with default settings, both of those things happen.

What "Keep Activity" controls

Gemini's main privacy switch is called Keep Activity. With it on, which is the default, Google says your chats and anything you share — files, photos, screens, Gemini Live transcripts — are saved to your Gemini Apps Activity. Google uses that activity to provide and improve its services, including training generative AI models, with the help of human reviewers. The activity is auto-deleted after 18 months by default, and you can change that to 3 months, 36 months, or never.

With Keep Activity off, Google says future chats will not appear in your activity and will not be used to train its models unless you send feedback. That is the setting most people mean when they ask whether they can make Gemini private.

Human review, and the three-year copy

This is the part of Gemini's policy that surprises people most. Google says a subset of chats is reviewed by people, including trained reviewers from its service providers, who judge whether answers were low-quality, inaccurate or harmful. Before a chat goes to reviewers, Google disconnects it from your account.

That disconnection has a consequence Google states plainly. Reviewed chats, along with related data like your language, device type, location info and feedback, are not deleted when you delete your activity. Because they are no longer tied to your account, deleting your history cannot reach them, and they are kept for up to three years. So "delete everything" empties your history, not the review pipeline.

The 72 hours that do not go away

Turning Keep Activity off, or using a temporary chat, does not mean a chat is never stored. Per Google, those chats are still retained with your account for 72 hours. Google uses them to respond to you, drawing on the last 24 hours of the chat as context, and to protect Google, its users and the public. Google also notes that even with Keep Activity off, it still uses your chats for that protection, "including with help from human reviewers". Temporary chats are not used to train Google's models. They are, briefly, a record.

Other things worth knowing

A few details from the same hub change the picture:

  • Feedback reopens the door. If you send feedback with Keep Activity off, Google collects your feedback plus the last 24 hours of your chats, including uploads, and keeps it for up to three years for review and improvement.
  • Memory can use sensitive details. If Gemini's memory feature is on, Google says it may use sensitive info you provided in chats to personalise your experience. A temporary chat is Google's own suggested way to keep something out of memory.
  • Other Google settings keep running. Changing Gemini's settings does not change Web & App Activity or Location History, which may keep saving data as you use other Google services.
  • Ads, for now. Google says Gemini chats are not currently used to show you ads, and that it will say so clearly if that changes.

Work and school accounts

Everything above is about personal Google accounts. If you use Gemini with a work or school account, Google's Workspace data terms apply instead. Your organisation's admins also control whether conversations are saved and for how long. Private from Google's reviewers and private from your employer are different questions, as the same question about ChatGPT shows.

So is Gemini private?

With Keep Activity off, a short auto-delete window and no feedback, Gemini's footprint shrinks to 72 hours per chat — plus anything already reviewed, which stays up to three years whatever you do next. With default settings it is one of the longer-lived records in the category. How it compares with the others is in what each AI chatbot keeps. The limits of turning things off are in using AI without it remembering you.

The version with nothing to review

Every control on this page is about limiting a record that already exists. nixm works the other way: the conversation is never written to a database, so there is no activity to auto-delete, nothing for a reviewer to read, and no copy to outlive your history. What remains of a session is a small signal that dissolves after seven days. It does not connect to your email, photos or calendar, and it is not trying to be a general assistant. It is a place to think out loud without leaving a trail.

frequently asked

Does Gemini save your conversations?

Yes, by default. With Keep Activity on, Google saves your chats to Gemini Apps Activity and auto-deletes them after 18 months unless you choose 3 months, 36 months or never.

Do humans read Gemini chats?

Some, yes. Google says a subset is reviewed by people, including service providers, after being disconnected from your account. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years.

If I delete my Gemini activity, is everything gone?

No. Per Google, chats already reviewed by humans are not deleted when you delete your activity, because they are no longer connected to your account. They are kept for up to three years.

Does turning off Keep Activity stop Google storing chats?

Not entirely. Google says chats are still kept with your account for 72 hours so Gemini can respond and so Google can protect its services. They are not used for training unless you send feedback.

Are Gemini temporary chats private?

They are not used to train Google's models, but Google still keeps them for 72 hours and may use them, with human help, for safety and abuse protection.

Does Gemini use my chats for ads?

Google says Gemini chats are not currently used to show you ads, and that it will communicate clearly if that changes.

Can I try nixm without an account?

Yes. Open nixm.ai and seed a signal — no account needed, and the conversation is never written to a database.
