How to delete your ChatGPT history — every part of it

October 1, 2026

To delete one chat, open the ••• menu next to it and choose Delete. To delete everything, go to Settings, then Data controls, then Delete all chats. That does not remove everything ChatGPT keeps, though. Saved memories are stored separately and must be deleted under Settings, then Personalization. Archived chats, shared links and uploaded files each have their own controls. Per OpenAI, deleted chats disappear from your view immediately and are permanently deleted from its systems within 30 days, unless legal or de-identification exceptions apply.

Delete one chat

  1. Open your chat history in the sidebar.
  2. Select the ••• menu next to the chat.
  3. Choose Delete and confirm.

The chat disappears from your account straight away. It is not instantly gone from OpenAI's systems; see "What deleting actually does" below.

Delete all chats at once

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Data controls.
  3. Choose Delete all chats and confirm.

Per OpenAI, this covers every chat in your account or workspace, including chats inside projects, and it cannot be undone. There is no built-in way to select a handful of chats and delete only those: it is one at a time, or everything.

Archived chats are not deleted chats

Archiving only hides a chat from your sidebar. OpenAI says archived chats stay in your account under your normal retention, so an archive full of old conversations is still a full history. To find them, go to Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats (Manage on some devices). From there you can delete them one by one.

Memory is stored separately

This is the step most people miss. ChatGPT's saved memories are not part of your chat history, and OpenAI states that deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a memory created from it. To clear them:

  1. Go to Settings, then Personalization.
  2. Open Manage memories, then delete individual memories or clear them all.
  3. If you want ChatGPT to stop using past chats, turn off Reference chat history as well. Per OpenAI, information remembered that way is then scheduled for deletion within 30 days.

To fully remove something you once told ChatGPT, delete both the memory and the chat where you said it.

Shared links and uploaded files

Shared links are public, view-only copies of a chat. Deleting the original chat is the safest way to retire them, and you can review and revoke them under Settings, then Data controls, then Shared links.

Uploaded files can outlive the chat they were uploaded in, especially if they were saved to your library. That gap is covered in whether ChatGPT keeps the photos you upload.

Delete your whole account

Account deletion is in Settings, under the account section. It removes your access, and OpenAI deletes account data within about 30 days, again with legal exceptions. It cannot be reversed, so if you want a copy first, use Export data in Data controls before you delete.

What deleting actually does

Per OpenAI's help centre:

  • Deleted chats leave your view immediately.
  • They are permanently deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days.
  • The exceptions are chats already de-identified and disconnected from your account, and anything OpenAI must keep for security or legal reasons.

That last exception is not theoretical. In 2025, a court order in the New York Times case required OpenAI to preserve content it would otherwise have deleted, as explained in the NYT v. OpenAI explainer. Deleting a chat also does not reach into a model that was already trained on it. If your chats were used for training before you turned that off, that use stays.

Stop it piling up again

  • Turn off training: Settings, then Data controls, then Improve the model for everyone.
  • Use temporary chat for anything sensitive. It stays out of your history and memory, though OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days. Details are in what temporary chats hide.
  • Review memory now and then under Manage memories.

Every setting in one place is in ChatGPT's privacy settings, explained. How long ChatGPT keeps what you do not delete is in how long ChatGPT keeps chat history.

The version with less to delete

Deleting is cleanup after the fact. nixm doesn't keep a transcript. A distilled log of the session stays with the signal for seven days, then dissolves, along with any images you uploaded. There is no history to go back and clear.

frequently asked

How do I delete my ChatGPT history?

Delete one chat from its ••• menu, or delete everything under Settings, then Data controls, then Delete all chats. Then clear saved memories under Settings, then Personalization, because they are stored separately.

Does deleting a chat delete ChatGPT's memory of it?

Not necessarily. OpenAI says saved memories are stored separately, and deleting a chat does not automatically delete a memory created from it. Delete the memory too.

How long does ChatGPT keep deleted chats?

Per OpenAI, deleted chats are removed from your view immediately and permanently deleted from its systems within 30 days, unless de-identification or legal exceptions apply.

Can I delete several ChatGPT chats at once?

Not selectively. ChatGPT lets you delete one chat at a time or every chat at once from Data controls.

Does archiving a chat delete it?

No. Archived chats stay in your account under normal retention. Delete them from Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats.
