ChatGPT privacy settings — every control that matters

October 1, 2026

The ChatGPT privacy settings that matter most are in two places. Under Settings, then Data controls: model training (Improve the model for everyone), shared links, archived chats, delete all chats and export. Under Settings, then Personalization: memory, meaning saved memories and chat-history references. Temporary chat is started from the chat itself. On Free and Go there are also ad controls. Turning training off and reviewing memory are the two changes that matter most.

OpenAI moves things around now and then, so names can differ slightly between web, iPhone and Android. The controls below are as described in OpenAI's help centre in 2026.

1. Model training

Where: Settings, then Data controls, then Improve the model for everyone.

What it does: while it is on, your conversations may be used to train OpenAI's models. Turning it off stops that for new conversations; it does not reach back to earlier ones. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces are not trained on by default.

2. Temporary chat

Where: started from the chat screen, not from Settings.

What it does: the chat stays out of your history, does not use or create memories, and is not used for training. OpenAI may still keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular one. Details are in what temporary chats hide.

3. Memory

Where: Settings, then Personalization.

What it does: two switches.

  • Reference saved memories covers the details ChatGPT stores about you on purpose.
  • Reference chat history lets it draw on past conversations.

Per OpenAI, turning off saved memories also turns off chat-history references, and turning off chat-history references schedules that remembered information for deletion within 30 days. Neither switch deletes your saved memories. For that, open Manage memories and delete them, individually or all at once.

4. Shared links

Where: Settings, then Data controls, then Shared links.

What it does: lists every public link you have created from a chat, and lets you revoke them. Worth checking if you have ever shared a conversation.

5. Archived chats

Where: Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats.

What it does: archiving hides chats from the sidebar but keeps them in your account. Review and delete them here.

6. Delete all chats

Where: Settings, then Data controls, then Delete all chats.

What it does: removes every chat in the account or workspace, including project chats, permanently. Per OpenAI, deleted chats leave its systems within 30 days, with legal exceptions. Memories are separate. The full walkthrough is in how to delete your ChatGPT history.

7. Export your data

Where: Settings, then Data controls, then Export data.

What it does: emails you a copy of your history. Worth doing before you delete your account.

8. Ads (Free and Go plans)

Where: ChatGPT's ad controls in Settings.

What it does: turn off ad personalisation, so ads use only the current chat, and clear the data used for ads. OpenAI says advertisers never receive your conversations. Paid plans from Plus up have no ads. More is in does ChatGPT sell your data.

9. Connected apps

Where: the apps or connectors section of Settings.

What it does: shows which services ChatGPT can reach on your behalf, such as email, calendars and files, and lets you disconnect them. Per OpenAI, disconnecting stops future access but does not delete conversations that already used that data.

The five-minute version

  1. Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
  2. Open Manage memories and delete anything you would rather it did not keep.
  3. Revoke old Shared links.
  4. Disconnect apps you no longer use.
  5. Use temporary chat for anything sensitive from now on.

What all of this adds up to is in is ChatGPT private.

Where nixm fits

nixm has no training switch, no memory to manage and no ads, because it does not do those things. nixm doesn't keep a transcript. A distilled log of the session stays with the signal for seven days, then dissolves, along with any images you uploaded.
