ChatGPT Temporary Chats — private from you, not from the server

July 28, 2026

Temporary Chats keep conversations out of your visible history and, per OpenAI, out of training — but they still exist on OpenAI's servers for up to 30 days, and a 2025 court order proved that window is real. nixm takes the other route: the conversation is never stored in the first place.

What does Temporary Chat actually do?

Three things, per OpenAI: the conversation doesn't appear in your history, isn't used to train models, and doesn't use or update Memory. That's genuinely useful — it solves the "someone sees my sidebar" problem and the training question in one toggle.

What doesn't it do?

It doesn't make the conversation not exist. OpenAI's own documentation says Temporary Chats may be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes. For that window, your "temporary" conversation is a record on a server — invisible to you, present to the company. The distinction sounds academic until it isn't: in May 2025, a federal preservation order in the New York Times case swept up even Temporary Chats, forcing OpenAI to retain them beyond its own policy for months. Temporary is a display setting with a retention policy attached, not an architecture.

Why does the 30-day window matter?

Because everything that exists can be compelled. The preservation order was eventually lifted that September, but logs saved under it remain accessible to litigants, and the case that caused it went on to produce twenty million user conversations in discovery. A chat that exists for 30 days is discoverable for 30 days — deletion schedules yield to court orders, always. The legal reality in full.

What's the difference between "deleted later" and "never stored"?

Everything, structurally. "Deleted later" means a record was created, lived on infrastructure, and was scheduled for removal — with exceptions for law, safety, and error. "Never stored" means no record was created: there is nothing to preserve, produce, or leak, because nothing exists. That's the ephemeral architecture — and it can't be retrofitted with a toggle.

How does nixm handle the same need?

The conversation is never written to any database — not for 30 days, not for one. What persists is a signal: a small distilled context (your intent, a short summary, colors) that lets you or anyone with the link resume the thread — and even that dissolves automatically seven days after creation, private-markable in the meantime. There's no temporary mode because there's no permanent one.

frequently asked

Do ChatGPT Temporary Chats get saved?

They're kept out of your history and training, but OpenAI says they may be retained up to 30 days for safety — they exist on servers during that window.

Can Temporary Chats be recovered or produced in court?

A 2025 federal preservation order swept up Temporary Chats along with deleted ones — retention schedules yield to court orders while a record exists.

Do Temporary Chats stop training on my data?

OpenAI says Temporary Chats aren't used for model training, which is one of the mode's genuine benefits.

Is Temporary Chat the same as incognito?

It's closer to hiding your own view — the conversation still transits and briefly lives on company infrastructure, like a browser's incognito mode and your ISP.

What's the alternative to a 30-day window?

Architecture that never stores the conversation at all — nixm keeps no chat log, and its distilled signal context dissolves in 7 days.
