How to delete Gemini history, and what Google keeps anyway

October 19, 2026

To delete one Gemini chat, open it from the sidebar menu and choose delete. To delete all of it, go to Gemini Apps Activity in your Google account (myactivity.google.com, Gemini Apps), choose Delete, and pick a time range or All time. To stop new chats being kept, turn Gemini Apps Activity off on the same page, or set auto-delete to three or eighteen months. Deleting removes the history from your account; Google states that conversations already selected for human review are kept separately for up to three years, and that recent activity may be retained briefly for safety. If you want nothing saved in the first place, use a tool that keeps no transcript.

Delete a single conversation

  1. Open Gemini on the web or in the app.
  2. In the sidebar list of recent chats, open the menu on the conversation (three dots).
  3. Choose Delete and confirm.

This removes it from your sidebar and from your Gemini Apps Activity. If you only want it out of sight, Pin and Rename are in the same menu, but that is not deletion.

Delete all Gemini history

  1. Go to your Google Account's activity page: myactivity.google.com, then Gemini Apps Activity (also reachable from Gemini via Settings or Activity).
  2. Choose Delete.
  3. Pick Last hour, Last day, All time, or a custom range, and confirm.

This is the Google-wide activity control, the same place your Search and YouTube history live, so check you are on the Gemini Apps section before choosing All time.

Stop Gemini saving new chats

On the same Gemini Apps Activity page, turn the activity setting off. New conversations then are not saved to your account and are not used to improve Google's models. Two consequences worth knowing: some Gemini features that depend on memory of past chats stop working, and Google states that even with the setting off, conversations are kept for a short period (it has described this as up to 72 hours) to provide the service and process feedback. The exact wording changes; read the notice on the page.

Set auto-delete instead

If you want history for a while but not forever, choose Auto-delete on the activity page and pick 3, 18 or 36 months. Everything older is removed on a rolling basis. This is the setting most people miss, and the sensible default for anyone who uses Gemini casually.

What Google says it keeps after you delete

  • Reviewed conversations. Google explains that a sample of conversations is read by trained reviewers to improve the product, and that these are disconnected from your account and retained for up to three years, even if you delete your activity. Google's advice in its own notice: do not enter confidential information or anything you would not want a reviewer to see.
  • Short-term retention. Recent conversations may be held briefly after deletion for safety and abuse prevention, and for up to 72 hours when activity is off.
  • Connected apps. If Gemini acted in Gmail, Docs, Drive or other Google services, what it created there lives in those services and is deleted there, not from the Gemini page.
  • Workspace and school accounts. On managed accounts the administrator's retention policy applies and the controls above may be locked.

The practical reading: deletion removes the history you can see and stops it being used for training, but a conversation that has already been sampled for review is out of your hands. The same page on deleting ChatGPT history reaches the same conclusion for the other side.

If you want nothing saved in the first place

Every setting above is a way to clean up after a system that is designed to keep things. The alternative is a system that does not. nixm keeps no transcript: the full conversation is not stored, so there is no chat history to clear, and each session distills to a small signal that dissolves after seven days, along with anything you uploaded. You can start without an account. For the conversations you would delete afterwards anyway, it is simpler to have them somewhere that forgets by design. The most private AI chatbot page compares the options.

frequently asked

How do I delete my Gemini chat history?

Open a chat from the sidebar menu and choose Delete for one conversation, or go to myactivity.google.com, Gemini Apps Activity, choose Delete and pick All time to remove everything.
