The pros and cons of AI, from people who build it for a living

October 14, 2026

AI is very good at drafting, summarising, translating, explaining and generating images, video and code on demand, at a cost that keeps falling. It is bad at knowing when it is wrong, it runs on your data unless you stop it, and it makes it easy to skip the thinking that was the point. The pros are real and so are the cons. Most of the cons come from how a tool is built and paid for, not from the idea of AI, which means you can avoid a lot of them by choosing well.

The pros of AI

  • Speed on first drafts. An email, a plan, a summary of a forty-page document, a first pass at code. The blank page is gone. You still do the judging, but you start from something.
  • A patient explainer. It will explain compound interest, or a diagnosis letter, or a clause in a lease, five times in five ways without sighing. For anyone who did not have a tutor growing up, that is new.
  • Translation and plain language. Across languages, and across registers: legal to plain English, expert to beginner, your rambling note to a clean paragraph.
  • Making things that used to need a team. An image, a short video with sound, a chart from pasted numbers, a working prototype. One person can now produce what took a designer, an editor and a developer a week.
  • Thinking out loud with something that talks back. Used well, it is a sparring partner: it asks the question you were avoiding and lists the option you forgot.
  • Access. Help with writing, reading and numbers is available at 2 am to anyone with a phone, in most languages, for very little money.
  • The price keeps dropping. What cost a subscription two years ago costs a credit now. Pay-per-use models mean you can use it once a month without paying for the month.

The cons of AI

  • It is confidently wrong. It invents citations, dates and facts in the same tone it uses for true ones. The person who does not check gets burned, and the error looks polished.
  • Your data is the default fuel. Most consumer AI keeps your conversations, and many train on them unless you find the setting. What you paste into a chat, a contract, a health question, a photo of your kids, can outlive the chat.
  • It makes skipping the work easy. If the tool writes the essay, you did not learn to write the essay. The cost is invisible until you need the skill without the tool.
  • Bias in, bias out. It learned from what people wrote, including the unfair parts, and it repeats them fluently.
  • Subscription creep. One tool for writing, one for images, one for video, one for research, each at twenty dollars a month. The "free" tools charge in data or watermarks instead.
  • Energy and water. Training and running large models uses real electricity and real cooling. The bill is paid somewhere, usually not where the model is used.
  • Work changes faster than people can. Some jobs shrink, some new ones appear, and the people in the first group are rarely the people in the second.
  • Concentration. A handful of companies run the models most of the world uses, and set the terms.

Advantages and disadvantages by where you use it

At work: the pro is throughput on the routine half of the job; the con is that pasting company or client material into a consumer tool can breach a contract without anyone noticing. Check what your workplace allows before you paste.

In education: the pro is a tutor for every student; the con, and the reason "cons of AI in education" is its own search, is that the tool can do the assignment, and the point of the assignment was doing it. The honest use is explaining and checking, not producing.

At home: the pro is help with the letter to the landlord, the recipe, the kid's homework question; the con is that home is where the most personal questions get asked, and those are the ones you least want kept.

How to keep the pros without most of the cons

  1. Check anything you would be embarrassed to get wrong. Open the source. Ask for the source. If it cannot give one, treat the claim as a guess.
  2. Do the thinking first, then ask. Write the rough version yourself and let the AI improve it. You keep the skill and get the speed.
  3. Do not paste what you could not retract. Or paste it into a tool that keeps nothing.
  4. Pay per use, not per month. You stop paying for the weeks you do not use it, and you stop paying with your data.
  5. Prefer tools that do not train on you. It is usually a single line in the privacy policy. Search it for "train".

Those five rules are, more or less, the reason nixm exists. It is pay-per-use, it keeps no transcript, it does not train on your conversations, and a conversation dissolves seven days after it was made unless you keep it. The retention table shows how the main AI tools compare on what they keep, and the privacy concerns article goes through the risks one by one.

Pros and cons of ChatGPT specifically

The pros: it is the most capable general tool most people have used, it is everywhere, and the free tier is generous. The cons are the general ones above, sharpened: chats are saved to your account by default and can be used for training unless you turn it off, deleted chats take time to leave, and a court order in 2025 kept conversations that would otherwise have been deleted. If you use it, learn the data controls. If what you are typing is sensitive, consider a tool that never had a transcript to keep.

frequently asked

What are the main pros of AI?

Speed on first drafts, patient explanation, translation and plain language, making images, video, charts and prototypes alone, a sparring partner for thinking, access at any hour, and a price that keeps falling.

What are the main cons of AI?

It is confidently wrong, it keeps and often trains on your data by default, it makes skipping the work easy, it repeats bias, it piles up subscriptions, it uses real energy, it changes work faster than people can adapt, and a few companies control it.

Is AI good or bad?

Neither. It is a tool whose cons mostly come from how a product is built and paid for. Check its answers, keep doing your own thinking, and choose tools that do not keep or train on what you type.

What are the disadvantages of AI in education?

The tool can do the assignment, and the assignment existed so the student would do it. Used for explaining and checking rather than producing, the same tool is a tutor for everyone.

Will AI take jobs?

It changes them. Routine parts shrink, new roles appear, and the people losing the first are not always the people getting the second. That gap is the real con, more than the headline.

What are the pros and cons of ChatGPT?

Pro: the most capable general tool most people have used, with a generous free tier. Con: chats are saved and can be used for training unless you turn it off, and deleted chats take time to leave. Learn the data controls, or use a tool that keeps no transcript for sensitive things.
