Claude vs ChatGPT: where each one is better, and what each keeps about you

October 19, 2026

ChatGPT is the broader product: more features, more integrations, image generation and voice built in, the biggest ecosystem of plugins and custom bots. Claude is the better writer and editor for most people, handles very long documents more gracefully, and is the one more developers reach for on code. Both have a usable free tier and a roughly comparable individual paid plan. The difference people notice least and should notice most: by default both keep your conversation history on their servers, and each has a training setting you have to go and check. If the conversation itself is the sensitive part, the answer may be neither.

The short version

Pick ChatGPT if you want one app that does everything: chat, images, voice, web browsing, a store of custom bots, deep links into other software. Pick Claude if most of what you do is write, edit, read long documents, or code, and you care about the quality of the prose coming back. Many people who use AI seriously keep both and switch by task. Neither is a bad choice; the mistake is choosing on hype rather than on the two or three things you actually do every week.

Writing and editing

This is where the two feel most different. Claude tends to write in a more natural register, follows style instructions more closely, and is better at editing your text rather than replacing it with its own. ChatGPT writes competently and fast but drifts toward a recognisable, even tone and padded structure unless you push it. For emails, documents, cover letters and anything a human will read closely, most writers prefer Claude. For quick first drafts and brainstorming, the gap is small.

Long documents

Both can take a long file now. Claude has historically handled very long inputs, a whole contract or a book-length manuscript, with fewer dropped details and less summarising-away of the middle. If your work is "read this 80-page thing and answer questions", test Claude first. If your documents are short, it does not matter.

Code

Both are strong. Developers lean toward Claude for reasoning through a large codebase and for careful edits; ChatGPT has broader tooling around it and is fine for everyday scripting. If you are not a programmer, this section does not decide anything for you.

Images, voice, browsing, extras

ChatGPT wins on breadth: it generates images natively, has a mature voice mode, browses the web, runs code, and has an ecosystem of custom bots. Claude can analyse images you give it and produce charts and documents, but it is not an image generator and its extras are fewer. If "do everything in one place" is the goal, this is the deciding column.

Free tiers and paid plans

Both offer a free tier that is good enough to decide whether you like the product, with limits on how much you can send and which model answers. Both sell an individual monthly plan at a similar price with higher limits and the best models, and higher tiers above that for heavy users. At the time of writing the plans are close enough that price should not be the deciding factor; limits and the model you get on the free tier change often, so check the current pages.

What each one keeps about you

This is the part most comparisons skip. Both products store your conversation history on their servers by default; that is what makes the sidebar of past chats work. Both have a setting that governs whether your conversations can be used to train future models, and the default and the retention period attached to that setting have changed more than once for each company. The honest advice is the same for both: open the privacy or data-controls settings, read what the training toggle currently says, and decide. Deleting a chat removes it from your view immediately and from their systems after a stated window, with exceptions for legal holds and safety review. The ChatGPT history page walks through one; the mechanics for Claude are similar.

When neither is the right tool

If the conversation itself is the sensitive thing, a legal matter, a medical worry, a draft you would not want in anyone's logs, then a product built around saved history is the wrong shape no matter which one you pick. nixm is built the other way round: no transcript of the conversation is kept, so there is no history sidebar, and each session distills to a small signal that dissolves after seven days along with anything you uploaded. You can start without an account. It is not a replacement for ChatGPT's breadth; it is the tool for the conversations you want to have and then not have on record. The most private AI chatbot page compares the options on that axis.

How to actually decide

  • Write down the three things you will do most. Writing, long documents or code: test Claude first. Images, voice, or "one app for everything": test ChatGPT first.
  • Run the same real task through both free tiers for a week. Judge the output, not the demo.
  • Before you paste anything personal into either, open the data settings once and read them.

frequently asked

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

For writing, editing, long documents and code, many people find Claude better. For breadth of features, image generation, voice and integrations, ChatGPT is ahead. It depends on what you do most.

Is Claude free?

Yes, there is a free tier with usage limits, and a paid individual plan at a price similar to ChatGPT Plus. Limits and the models on each tier change, so check the current page.

Does Claude save your conversations?

Yes, conversation history is stored on Anthropic servers by default so you can return to it. There is a data setting that controls whether chats may be used for training; read its current wording before deciding.

Does ChatGPT use your chats to train its models?

By default consumer chats can be used to improve the models unless you turn that off in data controls. The setting and retention terms have changed over time, so check them in your account.

Which is better for students, Claude or ChatGPT?

Claude for reading long material and improving your own writing; ChatGPT for breadth, voice and images. Either works for explanations and practice questions.

Is there an AI chat that keeps nothing?

nixm keeps no transcript: the full conversation is not stored, and each session distills to a signal that dissolves after seven days. It is for conversations you do not want on record, not a replacement for every feature of the big two.
