Is DeepSeek safe? It depends which DeepSeek you mean

September 25, 2026

The DeepSeek app and website are the risky version for privacy. Per DeepSeek's own privacy policy, your prompts, uploads and chat history are collected, processed and stored in the People's Republic of China. They are kept for as long as you have an account and used to train its models unless you opt out by email. Several governments have restricted it on official devices for that reason. The open DeepSeek models are a different case: run them yourself and nothing goes to DeepSeek at all. If you want a conversation that is never written down anywhere, that is what nixm is for.

Two DeepSeeks, two answers

"DeepSeek" means two different things, and the safety question splits with them. There is the DeepSeek app and website, a chatbot service run by Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co. in China. And there are the DeepSeek models, released as open weights that anyone can download and run on their own hardware, or use through other providers. Most of the worry is about the first. Almost none of it applies to the second.

What DeepSeek's own policy says

DeepSeek's privacy policy, last updated February 10, 2026, is unusually direct, and all of the following is taken from it.

  • Where your data goes. The company says it directly collects, processes and stores your personal data in the People's Republic of China.
  • What it collects. Text and voice input, prompts, uploaded files and photos, feedback and chat history. It also collects your device model, IP address, device identifiers and approximate location.
  • How long it keeps it. For as long as you have an account, and otherwise "as long as necessary" for its purposes. That includes improving its services and handling legal claims. There is no fixed number.
  • Training. Your data is used to train and improve its models. Opting out is listed as one of your rights, exercised by emailing privacy@deepseek.com, not by flipping a setting in the app.
  • Who else sees it. Entities in its corporate group, including for foundation-model training. Also law enforcement and public authorities, when DeepSeek believes it is necessary to comply with law, legal process or government requests.

The policy also asks you not to give it sensitive personal data at all: health, religion, sexuality, immigration status, children's data and more. That is sensible advice for any chatbot. Here it comes from the company itself.

Why governments restricted it

The storage location is the reason behind most of the headlines. Italy's data protection authority ordered the app blocked there in early 2025. South Korea's privacy regulator paused new downloads over data concerns, and DeepSeek acknowledged that its handling of domestic privacy law had fallen short. Australia and a number of US agencies and states barred it from government devices. These actions are about official devices and national regulators. In most places, an ordinary person can still download the app.

The underlying concern is legal, not technical. Data held in China is subject to Chinese law. That includes rules that can require organisations to assist state intelligence work, with no equivalent of the court oversight users in the US or EU can expect. DeepSeek's own policy says it shares data with authorities in response to government requests.

Security is a separate question

Privacy is about what a company does with your data on purpose. Security is about what happens when something goes wrong. Early in 2025, the security firm Wiz reported finding a publicly accessible DeepSeek database containing chat history and internal data, which was closed after it was disclosed. That is not unique to DeepSeek; Grok's share links are another recent example of chats ending up somewhere users did not expect. It is still a reason to treat anything typed into a hosted chatbot as potentially exposable.

The version that stays local

This is the part most "is DeepSeek safe" answers skip. DeepSeek releases its models as open weights. Run one on your own machine, or through a provider that hosts it in your region, and your prompts never reach DeepSeek's servers. The privacy question then becomes a question about whoever runs it. On your own hardware, that is you. Running a large model locally takes real hardware, and a third-party host brings its own privacy policy. But the China storage issue belongs to the app, not the model.

So is DeepSeek safe?

For anything personal, work-related or sensitive, the DeepSeek app is the weakest option among the major chatbots on privacy. That is not a guess about intent. It is what its own policy says about storage, retention and training. For casual questions you would not mind anyone reading, the risk is smaller but the policy is the same. The open model, run somewhere you control, is a different and much safer proposition. How DeepSeek's app compares with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and the rest is in what each AI chatbot keeps. What "private" can actually mean is in the most private AI chatbot.

The version with nothing stored anywhere

Every answer on this page comes down to where a record ends up. nixm is built so there is no record: the conversation is never written to a database, in any country. What remains of a session is a small signal that dissolves after seven days. It is a place to think out loud without leaving a trail.

frequently asked

Is DeepSeek safe to use?

The app and website store your data in China, keep it for as long as you have an account and use it for training unless you opt out, per DeepSeek's own policy. Avoid them for anything personal or sensitive. The open models, run somewhere you control, avoid those issues.

Where does DeepSeek store my data?

DeepSeek's privacy policy, updated February 10, 2026, says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China.

Does DeepSeek train on my chats?

Yes. Its policy lists training and improving its models as a use of your inputs. Opting out is a right you exercise by emailing privacy@deepseek.com.

Is DeepSeek private?

Not in the sense most people mean. Chats are stored in China, shared within its corporate group, and can be disclosed to authorities in response to government requests, per its own policy.

Why is DeepSeek banned in some countries?

Mainly because of where it stores data. Italy's regulator blocked the app in early 2025, South Korea paused downloads, and several governments barred it from official devices. Most bans do not cover private individuals.

Is running DeepSeek locally safe?

For privacy, far safer. The open-weight models run on your own hardware or a host you choose, so prompts never reach DeepSeek's servers. You are then trusting whoever runs it instead.

Can I try nixm without an account?

Yes. Open nixm.ai and seed a signal — no account needed, and the conversation is never written to a database.
