How to share a ChatGPT conversation, and what the link gives away

October 14, 2026

Hover over the chat in ChatGPT's sidebar, click the share icon, check the preview, and copy the link. Anyone with that link can read the conversation up to the moment you shared it, but they cannot add to it: shared links are read-only snapshots. The link stays live until you delete it under Settings, Data controls, Shared links.

How to share a ChatGPT conversation

  1. Find the chat in the left sidebar and hover over it. A share icon appears.
  2. Click share. ChatGPT shows a preview of exactly what the other person will see.
  3. Decide about your name. By default the link carries no name or personal details. The three-dots menu in the preview lets you attach your name if you want it shown.
  4. Copy the link and send it however you like. There is no recipient list: whoever has the link can open it.

What the other person gets

  • A snapshot, not a live chat. The link includes everything up to the moment you shared. Messages you add afterwards are not in it. To share those, make a new link.
  • Read-only. OpenAI has removed the option to continue a conversation from a shared link, on every plan. The reader can look, copy and quote, but not reply inside it.
  • No login needed. They do not need a ChatGPT account to read it.
  • Everything you typed. If you pasted a document, a contract or a message from someone else earlier in that chat, it is in the snapshot too. Check the preview before you copy the link.

How to delete a shared link

Open Settings, then Data controls, then Shared links, and click Manage. Every link you have ever made is listed there with its date; delete any of them, or all of them. You can also delete a single link from the share preview's three-dots menu. Once deleted, the link stops working for everyone who has it.

Why a shared link is still a privacy decision

A shared link is a public web page with a long, unguessable address. OpenAI says shared links are not indexed by search engines, and the page is only reachable by someone who has the address. The weak point is the address itself: once it is in an email, a group chat or a document, it travels. Anyone it reaches can open it until you delete it.

It has gone wrong before. ChatGPT's share feature briefly offered a "Make this chat discoverable" option, and shared chats with it switched on could be indexed by search engines. At the end of July 2025, researchers found thousands of them in Google, some containing personal details their authors clearly never meant to publish, and OpenAI removed the option; the ChatGPT data leaks article has the rest. That option no longer exists, and today's links are not discoverable, but the lesson stands: a link is a key, and keys get copied.

Sharing a conversation someone can continue

Sometimes the point of sharing is not to show a transcript but to bring someone into the thinking: a partner weighing the same decision, a colleague picking up a draft, a friend adding what you missed. ChatGPT's links cannot do that.

In nixm, every conversation is a signal with its own link. Send the link and the other person opens the signal and keeps going. They do not see what you typed, because a signal has no thread to read. They see the work so far, the latest images, clips, charts and research, and nixm picks up with them already knowing what was decided. There is no transcript to leak: nixm keeps a distilled log of the session with the signal, and the signal dissolves seven days after it was made unless you extend it, taking the log and any uploads with it. Signals are open to anyone with the link by default, and you can set one to private from your dashboard so only you can open it. The signal-vs-thread article explains how the AI keeps track without a transcript.

frequently asked

Can someone reply inside a shared ChatGPT conversation?

No. OpenAI has deprecated continuing a conversation from a shared link on every plan. The reader can view and copy the snapshot but cannot add to it.

Does a shared ChatGPT link update when I add messages?

No. It is a snapshot of the conversation up to the moment you shared it. Make a new link to share later messages.

Does the other person see my name?

Not by default. The link carries no name or personal information unless you choose to add your name in the share preview.

How do I delete a ChatGPT shared link?

Settings, then Data controls, then Shared links, then Manage. Delete one link or all of them. A deleted link stops working for everyone.

Can Google find my shared ChatGPT conversation?

OpenAI says shared links are not indexed by search engines. Anyone who has the link can still open it, so treat the link like a key.

How do I share a conversation someone can continue?

In nixm, send the signal link. The other person opens the signal and keeps going. They see the work so far, not your messages, and nixm already knows what was decided. The signal dissolves seven days after it was made unless you extend it.
