Claude "overloaded" and "something went wrong": what each means and what to do

November 2, 2026

"Claude is overloaded" (and, in the API, error 529 overloaded_error) means demand on Anthropic's servers exceeds capacity at that moment. It is not your account, your prompt, or your limit. Check status.anthropic.com: an incident means wait; a green page means a peak, which usually passes in minutes. "Something went wrong" is a different, generic failure, mostly caused on your side: a huge attachment, a very long chat, or an extension. If the work is due now, nixm works without an account and has no capacity queue.

"Claude is overloaded": what it means

Anthropic serves a fixed amount of traffic at a time. When requests exceed it, new ones are refused with the overloaded message in the app and, for developers, HTTP 529 with an overloaded_error body in the API. It is a server-side condition. Your account standing, your plan, the length of your prompt and your usage limit have nothing to do with it; a brand-new account and a heavy user see the same message in the same second.

Incident or peak?

Open status.anthropic.com. An active incident is listed with a time and a scope (claude.ai, the API, or both); the fix is to wait for the update. If the page is green, you are in a demand peak: model launches, the first hours after a major announcement, and the daily overlap of North American and European working hours are the usual times. Peaks pass in minutes to an hour.

What does nothing, and what makes it worse

  • Retrying every few seconds. It adds to the load that caused the message. In the API, immediate retries are the fastest way to turn a peak into a longer one.
  • Shortening the prompt. Overload is about the number of requests, not their size.
  • Switching browsers, clearing cookies, a VPN. The condition is global and server-side.
  • Starting a new chat. Same servers, same answer.

What helps

  1. Wait five to fifteen minutes and try once.
  2. In the API, retry with exponential backoff and jitter, honour the retry-after header when present, and consider a smaller model for the retry if the task allows.
  3. Move the work to an off-peak hour in your region if it can wait.

"Something went wrong": a different problem

This is Claude's generic failure message and it is usually local, not capacity. In order of likelihood: an attachment that is too large or in a format Claude could not read; a conversation so long that the next message cannot be processed (the fix is a new chat with a two-line summary); a browser extension interfering with the page; a stale session (sign out and back in); and occasionally a brief incident, which the status page will show. If it appears every time on one chat and never on a fresh one, the chat is the problem.

Not to be confused with the usage limit

If the message mentions a limit or a reset time, that is Claude's usage meter, not overload. It is counted in text processed inside a rolling window and climbs fastest in long chats with attachments. How the limit works and how to stretch it.

What to use in the meantime

If the work is due now, keep a second door. Claude vs ChatGPT covers where each is better. nixm has no capacity queue and no rolling window; you buy credits once, they never expire, and each message costs one. A session keeps a fixed intent and a distilled log rather than the full transcript, so cost per message does not climb with the length of the conversation; the signal vs thread test shows the two curves. You can start without an account, and no transcript of what you type is kept.

What this tells you

That "overloaded" is the honest version of a message most services dress up as "something went wrong". Anthropic says what it is. The right response is the same as for any shared resource at peak: step back, come back, and have a second place to work.

frequently asked

What does Claude is overloaded mean?

Demand on Anthropic servers exceeds capacity at that moment. It is not your account, plan, prompt or usage limit. In the API it is HTTP 529 overloaded_error.

How long does Claude stay overloaded?

Peaks usually pass in minutes to an hour. During a listed incident on status.anthropic.com, until the incident clears.

Does retrying help when Claude is overloaded?

Not immediately; rapid retries add to the load. Wait five to fifteen minutes and try once. In the API, use exponential backoff with jitter.

Why does Claude say something went wrong?

Usually a local cause: an attachment that is too large, a very long conversation, an extension, or a stale session. Start a new chat with a short summary and try again.

Is Claude overloaded the same as the usage limit?

No. The usage limit mentions a reset time and is about how much text you have processed. Overloaded is about server capacity and affects everyone at once.

What can I use while Claude is overloaded?

nixm has no capacity queue or rolling window, starts without an account, and keeps no transcript of what you type.
