AI for students: what to use, how to study with it, and what backfires

October 19, 2026

Students get the most out of AI by using it as a tutor who never gets tired: explain this again more simply, quiz me on this chapter, tell me what I got wrong and why, give me a harder version. The tools worth knowing are a general chat model (ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini), a sourced search tool for research, and whatever your school provides. The habit that backfires is outsourcing the part you are supposed to learn. Check your course policy, keep your own notes, and be careful what you paste: most tools keep it.

The tools, briefly

  • A general chat model. ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini; the free tiers are enough. Pick one and learn it well rather than hopping. Claude for feedback on your writing, Gemini if your school runs on Google, ChatGPT for breadth. The comparison helps you choose.
  • A sourced search tool such as Perplexity, for "what is the current research on X" questions, because it shows where each claim came from. Still verify.
  • Your institution's tools. Many schools license AI with their own data terms and policy; those are usually the safest to use for coursework.
  • A tool that keeps nothing, for the questions you would rather not have in an account history. nixm starts without an account, keeps no transcript, and the session dissolves after seven days.

Studying with AI: methods that work

  • Explain it three ways. "Explain photosynthesis as if to a ten-year-old. Now as a textbook would. Now with an analogy from cooking." Understanding shows up in the gap between versions.
  • Quiz me. Paste your notes or a chapter summary and ask for ten questions, one at a time, with feedback on each answer. Then "ask me the ones I got wrong, differently".
  • Teach it back. Explain the topic to the AI in your own words and ask it to find the holes. This is the fastest way to discover what you only think you understand.
  • Worked examples, then variations. For maths and science: "Show the steps for this problem, then give me three similar ones and check my working."
  • Dense reading. Paste a hard paragraph, ask for a plain explanation, then read the original again. The point is to be able to read the original.
  • Revision plans. "Exam in three weeks, these six topics, I am weakest on two and four; make a plan with daily sessions under an hour."

Essays and assignments

Use AI before and after writing, not instead of it: for the counter-argument, the structure and a tutor's critique of your draft. The essays page has the workflow. Two warnings that apply everywhere: models invent citations, so find sources yourself and only use AI to check your reading of them; and read your course's AI policy, because they differ and some require disclosure.

What backfires

  • Outsourcing the learning. If the AI does the problem set, the exam does not go well. Use it to check and explain, not to produce.
  • Trusting it on facts. It is confident when wrong. Anything that ends up in your work gets verified against a real source.
  • Generic output in your voice. Markers recognise it. Anything submitted should be written by you, even if AI helped you plan it.
  • Pasting everything. Your draft thesis, your personal statement, your health note to a professor, a classmate's work: most tools keep all of it in your history, and some can use it for training unless you turn that off.

Privacy habits worth picking up now

Open the data settings of whichever tool you use and read the training toggle once. Do not paste other people's work or personal details. For the questions that are personal, a health situation, a family matter, a complaint about a teacher, a draft you are embarrassed by, use a tool that keeps nothing. nixm is built for that: no account to start, no transcript kept, the session dissolves after seven days along with anything you uploaded. It also draws charts and diagrams in the conversation, which is handy for revision, one credit per message after the free ones.

For teachers reading this

The same tools work as a teaching assistant: generating practice questions at three difficulty levels, producing worked examples, drafting feedback you then personalise, and explaining a concept five different ways for five different students. The AI in education page covers the classroom side.

frequently asked

What is the best AI for students?

A general chat model used as a tutor, the free tiers of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini are enough, plus a sourced search tool for research and whatever your school provides. Learn one well.

How do students use AI for studying?

Explain a topic three ways, generate quizzes from notes, teach the concept back and have the AI find gaps, request worked examples and variations, and build revision plans.

Is using AI for homework cheating?

It depends on your course policy. Using it to understand, practise and get feedback is usually fine; submitting its output as your work usually is not. Read the rules and disclose when required.

Can AI help with studying for exams?

Yes: quiz generation from your notes, spaced practice on the questions you got wrong, worked examples, and plain explanations of hard material. The learning happens when you answer, not when it does.

Are free AI tools safe for students to use?

The models are fine; the data terms vary. Check whether conversations are stored and used for training, and avoid pasting personal details or work that belongs to someone else.

Is there an AI for students that does not keep my questions?

nixm keeps no transcript: you can start without an account, the full conversation is not stored, and the session dissolves after seven days.
