AI flashcard generator: from your notes to question/answer cards, in one message

November 7, 2026

Paste the notes into nixm and say "make 20 flashcards from this". The cards are written in the chat as question/answer pairs; say "turn these into a study guide" and the same notes become a one-page summary with the terms in bold. No account to start, one chat credit a message, no transcript kept.

How to make flashcards with AI

Give the generator the material, not the topic. A chapter pasted in produces cards about what the chapter says; "flashcards on the French Revolution" produces cards about what the model remembers, which is a different and less useful set for your exam. Then say how many, and what kind: definitions, dates, cause-and-effect, formulas, vocabulary with the word on one side and the sentence it appears in on the other.

On nixm the cards are written in the chat as question/answer pairs. Tell it which ones you missed and it writes those again, in a new order. Flashcards are one of the question types it makes, alongside multiple choice and short answer; the quiz version, drawn in the chat with clickable answers, is in the AI quiz generator.

The flashcard apps, and where they differ

Quizlet is the default: its AI turns notes into a set, and the set lives in your Quizlet account, with the fuller study modes (Learn, Test, Practice Tests) behind the subscription. Anki is the spaced-repetition engine serious students use; the AI part comes from add-ons and other tools that export to it. Knowt makes cards and notes from lectures and PDFs, with free flashcards and the AI lecture and PDF tools on its paid plan. Brainscape sells confidence-based repetition on a subscription. If you want years of spaced repetition, you want one of those; if you want the cards for this chapter, tonight, you want the chat.

Where nixm sits

You can start without an account. Each message, including the ones that make or reshuffle the cards, costs one chat credit. A free account (email link or Google, no card) comes with starter credits; after that you buy a pack once, no subscription. If you are signed in you can share the signal link with a classmate, who can ask for more cards without seeing your messages, or get a file that opens in any browser. No transcript of what you type is kept, and the signal dissolves seven days after it was made unless you extend it; the cards are for the exam, not for a profile of you. For a set you want to keep for months, ask for the cards as a two-column list and paste them into Anki or Quizlet, which both import that.

Study guide from the same notes

"Turn these notes into a study guide" produces the other thing students search for: a one-page summary in the order the course goes, terms in bold, the three things most likely to be asked. Ask for it after the flashcards and the two agree with each other, because they come from the same paste. A summary for a longer document, for the week when everything is due, is the same message with the chapter instead of the notes.

How to get cards that test, not describe

  • One fact per card. Say so; the model will otherwise put three in one answer.
  • Ask for the reverse set too. Term to definition and definition to term are different recalls.
  • Ask for "why" cards. "Why did X happen" cards are the ones that survive a rephrased exam question.
  • Cut the easy ones. "Remove the cards I got right twice" keeps the deck honest.

Free AI flashcard generator: what free means here

Quizlet, Knowt and Brainscape have free tiers with limits on study modes, AI features or premade content; Anki is free on desktop. On nixm you start without an account, a free account comes with starter credits, and a pack is bought once when they run out, no monthly plan, no cap on how many sets you make.

frequently asked
