What can ChatGPT Enterprise and Business admins actually see?

September 24, 2026

More than most employees assume. Per OpenAI, admins of a ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu workspace can access a log of conversations through the Compliance API, and admins of a ChatGPT Business workspace can view, access, export and delete members' conversations. Temporary chats are included on Enterprise for 30 days. The usage dashboard only shows totals, but the compliance route carries the words. A work account is a company record by design; thinking that is yours belongs somewhere that keeps nothing, like nixm.

The short answer, by plan

Which ChatGPT you are signed in to decides almost everything, so start there. This page is about the admin side of a company workspace. If you are using a personal account on a work laptop or network, that is a different question, answered in can your employer see your ChatGPT.

On a company workspace, OpenAI's own privacy page is plain about it. For Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare, end users see their own conversations, and workspace admins can access an audit log of conversations and GPTs through the Enterprise Compliance API. For ChatGPT Business, called ChatGPT Team until August 2025, workspace admins can view, access, export and delete end-user conversations in the workspace. Neither of those is a loophole or a misuse. It is the product working as sold.

Enterprise and Edu: the Compliance API

The Compliance API is how a company pulls its ChatGPT data into the systems it already uses for records. When OpenAI announced it, the company described a time-stamped record that includes conversations, uploaded files, workspace GPT configuration, memories and the list of workspace users. Its help centre says the data is meant to be connected to three kinds of tools: eDiscovery, used to find material for litigation and investigations; data loss prevention, which watches for sensitive data leaving; and SIEM, the security team's log monitor.

OpenAI lists the partners that already ingest these logs, including Microsoft Purview, CrowdStrike, Netskope, Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler, Varonis, Global Relay and Smarsh. If your company runs any of those, your ChatGPT conversations may already be flowing into the same place as your email archive.

Access is gated at the top. Per OpenAI, only a workspace owner can grant the permission that exposes conversation messages, and every request to the API is itself logged. That limits who inside the company can pull the logs. It does not change what the logs contain.

Temporary chat is not a hiding place at work

On a personal account, temporary chat keeps a conversation out of your history. On a company workspace, OpenAI's help centre says that for eligible Enterprise customers, temporary chats are available through the Compliance API for 30 days, even when the workspace has set a different retention period. The chat disappears from your sidebar. It does not disappear from the compliance route.

Business: fewer tools, more direct access

The smaller plan is, if anything, more direct. OpenAI's wording for Business is not an audit log through an API. It says admins can view, access, export and delete end-user conversations in the workspace. There is less compliance plumbing around it, and the access is stated just as clearly. If your team runs on a Business workspace, assume anything typed into it can be read by whoever administers it.

What the usage dashboard shows, and what it does not

This is where a lot of the confusion comes from. The workspace analytics most admins look at are aggregate: messages sent, active users, adoption over time. OpenAI's own help page for those analytics points elsewhere for anything more: for raw logs and legal or security workflows, use the Compliance API. So "my manager only sees a usage chart" can be true and still miss the point. The chart is not where the words are. The compliance route is.

Deleting a chat does not delete the company's copy

Workspace admins set how long conversations are kept, and per OpenAI, deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days unless it is legally required to keep them. But that is OpenAI's copy. The Compliance Logs Platform itself holds data for 30 days, and OpenAI's advice to companies wanting longer retention is to download the logs continuously and keep them under their own policy. If your employer does that, the copy already in its archive follows its records policy, not your delete button. The same gap between deleting and being gone shows up in what happens to deleted chats in court.

What OpenAI itself sees

For completeness: on Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare, OpenAI says its authorised employees access conversations only to resolve incidents, to recover a user's conversations with explicit permission, or where the law requires it. Business data is not used to train models by default. None of that changes what your own company can see; it only describes the vendor's side.

The two-lane rule

None of this makes a work account bad. A company needs records of work done on company tools, and a well-run workspace is exactly that. The mistake is treating it as a private notebook. It feels like a private conversation and it is a stored business record.

So keep two lanes. Company work goes in the company workspace, under the company's rules; follow your employer's AI policy, and do not move company material into tools it has not approved. Your own thinking — whether to take the other offer, how to raise something difficult with your manager, what you actually think about the reorg — does not belong in a system whose admins can export it.

A lane that keeps nothing

That second lane is what nixm is for. There is no workspace and no admin console behind it; the conversation is never written to a database, and what remains of a session dissolves after seven days. It is not a place for company files, and it is not trying to be. It is a place to think out loud about your own life without it becoming anyone's record.

frequently asked

Can ChatGPT Enterprise admins read my conversations?

Yes, through the Compliance API. OpenAI says Enterprise and Edu admins can access an audit log of conversations and GPTs that way, and companies commonly feed it into eDiscovery, data loss prevention and security tools.

Can my employer see my temporary chats?

On Enterprise, yes for 30 days. OpenAI states that temporary chats are available through the Compliance API for 30 days, even when the workspace has a different retention period.

What can ChatGPT Business admins see?

Per OpenAI, Business workspace admins can view, access, export and delete end-user conversations in the workspace. Business was called ChatGPT Team until August 2025.

Does the admin usage dashboard show what I typed?

No. Workspace analytics are aggregate — messages sent, active users, adoption. Conversation content goes through the Compliance API instead.

If I delete a chat, is it gone from my company?

Not necessarily. OpenAI removes deleted conversations from its systems within 30 days unless legally required to keep them, but a company that exports its compliance logs keeps its own copy under its own policy.

Can OpenAI employees read Enterprise chats?

OpenAI says authorised employees access Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare conversations only to resolve incidents, to recover conversations with the user's explicit permission, or where the law requires it.

Can I try nixm without an account?

Yes. Open nixm.ai and seed a signal — no account, no workspace, no admin console, and the conversation is never written to a database.

try it now — no account, nothing stored. even the signal dissolves in seven days.
