Is Meta AI private? What Meta does with your chats

September 27, 2026

Not in the way most people assume. Since December 16, 2025, Meta has used people's interactions with its AI features, by voice or text, to personalise the content and ads they see across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. Meta says it does not use sensitive topics such as health, religion, politics or sexual orientation for ads, and there is no full opt-out other than not using Meta AI. If you want a conversation with no transcript kept and no ads attached, that is what nixm is for.

The short answer

Meta AI is free and built into apps billions of people already use, and it is paid for the way those apps are paid for: advertising. Since December 16, 2025, what you say to Meta AI is one of the signals that decides what you see next.

Your chats and your ads

Meta announced the change in October 2025 and it took effect on December 16. Meta said interactions with its AI features, by voice or text, would be added to existing signals such as likes and follows to shape recommendations and ads. Its own example: talk to Meta AI about hiking, and you may later see hiking groups and ads for boots. Meta's updated privacy policy describes this as covering prompts, including questions, messages and media you share with its AI products. That umbrella includes the Meta AI assistant, Vibes and AI features on its smart glasses.

What Meta says it excludes

Meta says that when people talk to Meta AI about sensitive topics such as religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, and racial or ethnic origin, it does not use those topics to show them ads. That is a limit on ad targeting, not on collection: those conversations are still processed and stored like any other.

Can you opt out?

Not fully. You can adjust ad preferences and, in some regions, object to Meta using your data for its AI. But there is no switch that keeps using Meta AI while stopping your chats from feeding personalisation. In practice the only complete opt-out is not to use Meta AI, which is harder than it sounds when it sits inside Instagram search and can be tagged into group chats.

The Discover feed lesson

In June 2025, many people found out that prompts they had shared from the Meta AI app were visible to others on its Discover feed, including some that were clearly never meant to be public. The feature required a share step, but plenty of users did not realise what sharing meant. The lesson generalises: any AI product with social features makes it easier than you expect to publish something private.

WhatsApp is a special case

Your personal WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, and Meta cannot read them. Messages you send to Meta AI, or tag it into, are different: they go to Meta so it can answer. Talking to Meta AI inside WhatsApp is not covered by the encryption that protects your chats with friends.

So is Meta AI private?

It is private from other users unless you share, and it is free. But your conversations with it are part of how Meta personalises your feeds and ads, and there is no full opt-out. If you use it for casual video or quick questions, that may be a fair trade. For anything personal, it is the wrong place. How it compares with other assistants is in what each AI chatbot keeps. If you came for its free video features, those are in Meta AI's video generator.

Where nixm fits

nixm has no feed, no ads and no social graph. nixm doesn't keep a transcript. A distilled log of the session stays with the signal for seven days, then dissolves, along with any images you uploaded. Nothing you type is used for training or advertising.
