Is ChatGPT safe to use? The four risks that actually matter

September 25, 2026

Yes, with four caveats. The official ChatGPT app and chatgpt.com are safe to use in the ordinary sense. The risks are elsewhere: answers that sound certain and are wrong, personal details you paste in and cannot fully take back, fake ChatGPT apps and sites built to collect logins and payments, and connected tools that can act on your behalf. Check anything important, keep sensitive details out, install only the official app, and give connectors the least access that works. For the privacy side on its own, see is ChatGPT private.

The short answer

ChatGPT will not infect your phone, and the official app does nothing unusual to your device. Hundreds of millions of people use it every week. When people ask whether it is safe, they usually mean one of four things, and each has a different answer. Here they are in rough order of how often they cause real trouble.

1. It can be confidently wrong

ChatGPT predicts plausible text; it does not look facts up unless it is searching. The result is answers that read as certain and are sometimes invented: a statistic, a quote, a legal citation, a drug interaction. OpenAI's own interface says it plainly under the message box: "ChatGPT can make mistakes. Check important info." That line is the single most important safety instruction in the product.

The practical rule is to match your checking to the stakes. A draft email needs a read-through. A medical, legal, financial or safety question needs a real source or a professional, even when the answer looks thorough. Ask for sources and then open them, because a citation in a reply is not proof that the page exists or says what the reply claims.

2. What you paste in does not fully come back out

This is the privacy half of the question. By default, consumer chats are stored until you delete them and can be used to train OpenAI's models. Deleted chats leave OpenAI's systems within about 30 days, with legal holds as the exception. The full breakdown, including temporary chat and the training switch, is in is ChatGPT private.

For safety, the simpler rule is what to leave out: passwords and one-time codes, card and bank numbers, government ID numbers, and other people's private details. If it is work material, check your employer's AI policy first. A work account is readable by your company's admins, as can your employer see your ChatGPT explains.

3. Fake ChatGPT apps and sites

ChatGPT's popularity makes it a favourite disguise. Copycat apps, lookalike websites and "ChatGPT Pro unlocked" offers exist to collect logins, card numbers or subscription fees for something OpenAI never made. The defence is dull and effective. Use chatgpt.com, or the app published by OpenAI in the official app stores, and check the developer name before you install. Be suspicious of any browser extension or download that promises extra ChatGPT features. And treat any email or text asking for your ChatGPT password or a login code as a phishing attempt.

4. Connected tools can act for you

ChatGPT can now connect to email, calendars, files and other apps, and can browse or take actions on your behalf. That is useful, and it changes the risk. Text on a web page or in a document can contain hidden instructions, a technique called prompt injection, which tries to steer the assistant into doing something you did not ask for. OpenAI warns about this risk in its own guidance for agent features. Connect only what a task needs, review before anything is sent or bought, and disconnect what you no longer use.

Is ChatGPT safe for kids and teens?

OpenAI's terms require users to be at least 13, and under-18s need a parent or guardian's permission. It also offers parental controls that let a parent link to a teen's account and adjust settings. That includes whether the teen's conversations can be used to improve OpenAI's models. The same four risks apply to teens, with the first one mattering most for schoolwork: a wrong answer delivered confidently is still wrong.

So, is it safe?

For everyday use, yes, once you treat it as a very capable assistant that can be wrong and that keeps what you tell it. The people who get hurt are usually the ones who trusted an answer they should have checked, pasted something they could not take back, or installed an app that was not really ChatGPT. How ChatGPT's data handling compares with other assistants is in what each AI chatbot keeps.

Where nixm fits

nixm does not fix the first risk; any AI can be wrong, so check what matters. It is built around the second. The conversation is never written to a database, so there is nothing to train on and nothing to take back later. What remains of a session is a small signal that dissolves after seven days. For thinking something through that you would not want stored, nixm is the version with nothing left behind.
