Gemini free limits: what the free app caps, when it resets, and what a paid plan changes

November 4, 2026

Free Gemini is generous for ordinary questions and tight on the expensive things. Google meters the app by compute rather than by message count: a simple chat costs very little, while image and video generation, the larger models and long chats cost much more. The allowance refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly limit, the free tier works with a much smaller context than the paid plans, and features like Deep Research can be unavailable at busy times. If you hit the limit mid-task, nixm has no usage cap, starts without an account, and keeps no transcript.

What the free Gemini app limits

Google meters the Gemini app by how much compute you use, not by one count of messages. The limit weighs the complexity of the prompt, the model and features you use, and the length of the chat: a simple conversation is rated very low, and video generally needs the most. Without a Google AI plan you get the standard limits, a context window of 32,000 tokens for long documents, and features that need more compute, like Deep Research, may be unavailable when demand is high. Google does not publish fixed numbers for the free tier, says limits can change without notice, and notes that users without a plan may be limited first when capacity is tight.

When the limits refresh

Every five hours, until you reach a weekly limit; when you hit it, Gemini tells you when it will refresh. That is a rolling window much like Claude's, not a midnight reset, so a heavy morning can leave you waiting in the afternoon, and a heavy week can leave you waiting until the weekly limit clears.

What counts and what does not

  • Counts most: generated video, generated images, turns on the larger models, long chats and big uploads.
  • Counts least: ordinary text questions on the default model, which Google rates very low, which is why most people never notice a limit until they generate pictures.
  • Work and school accounts are metered by the organisation's plan, not the consumer caps, and an administrator can switch features off entirely; see Gemini not working.

How to stay under them

  1. Draft in text, generate once. Work out the picture in words before spending an image generation on it.
  2. Save the larger model for the hard question. The default handles most of the day.
  3. Trim uploads to the pages you need.
  4. Know the refresh time and queue the expensive requests for after it.

What Google AI Pro and Ultra change

Higher limits across the board: Google AI Plus doubles the standard limits, Google AI Pro gives four times them, and Ultra five or twenty times the Pro limits depending on the subscription. Pro and Ultra also raise the context from 32,000 tokens to a million, and a subscriber who hits the limit can carry on with Flash-Lite. The free app is a sampler; the plans are the product. Whether that is worth paying for depends on how often you hit the limit; if it is only images, generating fewer and better is cheaper than a plan.

When you hit a cap mid-task

For text, nixm has no usage cap: one credit per message, bought once, never expiring, no reset clock. You can start without an account, and no transcript of what you type is kept. For a picture or a short video, you can plan it in words on nixm without an account. Composing a still (two chat credits) and rendering an 8-second clip with sound take a free sign-in with no card, one video credit per clip. If part of the reason you are looking is what Google keeps, is Gemini private is the page to read, and the error that sometimes masquerades as a limit is covered in Gemini something went wrong.

What the limits tell you

That Google prices the free app by what costs it money: generation and the big models. Text is cheap; pictures and video are the gate. Plan the expensive requests and the free app goes a long way.

frequently asked

What are the Gemini free limits?

One compute-based allowance that refreshes every five hours up to a weekly limit. Simple chat costs very little; image and video generation, the larger models and long chats cost most. The free tier also has a smaller context than paid plans.

When do Gemini free limits reset?

Every five hours, until you reach a weekly limit. The notice you see when you hit it says when it refreshes.

Does free Gemini limit messages?

Not by message count. Usage is compute-based and simple chat costs very little, so text rarely hits it; generation and the larger models use it up.

How many images can free Gemini make a day?

Google does not publish a number for the free tier. Images draw on the same compute-based allowance, and the notice shows when it refreshes.

Does Google AI Pro remove the limits?

No. Pro gives four times the standard limits and Ultra five or twenty times the Pro limits. Limits exist on every plan.

What can I use when I hit a Gemini cap?

nixm has no usage cap or reset clock for text, starts without an account, and keeps no transcript of what you type.
