Is there an OpenAI gift card?

September 15, 2026

Yes — since September 2026. Per OpenAI's help documentation, it is a US-dollar stored-value card sold through participating US retailers such as Best Buy, in amounts from $15 to $250, redeemed at chatgpt.com/redeem into an account balance that pays for subscriptions, upgrades and credits on ChatGPT web only. It does not expire. That makes it a different product from OpenAI's gift credits, which still expire 12 months after redemption. It is also US-only, so a nixm gift code remains the option for anyone else — and for anyone who would rather give five videos than a plan.

What changed in September 2026

Until this month the honest answer was no. OpenAI sold gift credits — a claim link that expired if unclaimed and credits that expired a year after redemption — and its own terms said those were not gift cards. That is still true of the credits. But OpenAI has now added an actual gift card alongside them, and its help documentation describes it plainly: a US-dollar-denominated, non-reloadable stored-value card, available through participating authorized retailers, currently digital, in amounts from $15 to $250 unless the retailer specifies otherwise.

You redeem it at chatgpt.com/redeem by entering the card's PIN. The full value lands in your ChatGPT wallet balance on whichever account you were signed in to, and that balance is applied automatically to eligible purchases before any other payment method.

Gift card or gift credits? They are not the same thing

OpenAI now sells two gifting products, and the differences are the whole decision.

The gift card holds dollars. It does not expire. It is bought from a retailer, not from OpenAI directly, and the balance can pay for a Plus or Pro subscription, an upgrade, a renewal, or a credit purchase. It works for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts, and for the owner of a Business workspace. It is US-only: you must be in the United States, on a USD-billed account, to redeem it.

Gift credits hold usage credits, not dollars. They are bought inside ChatGPT by a Plus or Pro subscriber and delivered as a one-time claim link. The link expires unclaimed after 30 days; redeemed credits expire 12 months later; the recipient must match the buyer's billing currency. The full mechanics are in how to gift ChatGPT credits and the expiry detail in do gifted ChatGPT credits expire.

If the recipient is in the US and you want them to have a subscription, the card is now the simpler gift. If you want to give usage rather than a plan, or the recipient is outside the US, the card does not help you.

What the balance cannot do

The restrictions matter more than the headline, so here they are as OpenAI states them.

Web only. The balance pays for purchases on chatgpt.com. It cannot pay for a subscription billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play — which is how a large share of ChatGPT subscribers actually pay. Someone whose Plus plan runs through their iPhone would have to cancel it, wait for it to end, and re-subscribe on the web before a gift card balance could touch it.

US only. Purchase and redemption both require being in the United States on a USD account. OpenAI's guidance is explicit: do not buy one for someone who cannot meet that, because sending a card to another country does not make it work there. And if a US recipient travels, a USD balance does not pay for anything billed in another currency.

All or nothing, and permanent. The full card value redeems to one account. It cannot be split, moved to another account, refunded to the card, or converted to cash. Redeem into the wrong account and it stays there.

Not every plan. As of September 10, 2026, OpenAI has paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the Pro $200 tier, so a balance cannot buy that plan while the pause lasts. And redeeming a card does not by itself start a subscription or add usage credits — it adds dollars, and the recipient still has to choose what to spend them on.

The other "ChatGPT gift cards" are still not OpenAI's

Third-party sites have sold "ChatGPT gift cards" for a while. Those are prepaid-Visa resellers: you buy a voucher, generate a virtual card, and use it as a payment method. They are not OpenAI products, they do not redeem at chatgpt.com/redeem, and their terms are the reseller's. The only OpenAI gift card is the one from OpenAI's participating retailers, redeemed with a PIN on OpenAI's own page.

Where nixm fits now

Honestly: OpenAI's card removes the expiry argument that applied to its credits. A nixm gift code also never expires, so on that point the two are now even. Where they still differ is who can use it and what it is for.

A nixm gift code works anywhere, with no country or currency requirement. It is bought through a direct checkout with no account needed. And it is not a stored dollar balance waiting for a plan to be chosen — it is a fixed bundle: 100 chat credits and 5 cinematic video credits with native sound, CA$24.99, redeemed in one step. Nothing recurs, nothing needs a second decision, and there is no subscription underneath deciding what gets spent first. That is the same principle behind everything nixm charges for — credits you bought are credits you keep.

So: US recipient, wants ChatGPT specifically, pays on the web — the OpenAI card is now a good gift. Anyone else, or anyone who would rather give something they can make with — the nixm code is the one without the fine print.

How to buy one

Through a direct checkout link — no account needed. Add the recipient's email and a message at checkout and delivery is handled for you, or leave them blank and hand the code over yourself. Buy it at gift — creator pack, CA$24.99.

How the recipient redeems it

Open nixm.ai, sign in with a magic link (free, no password), tap have a gift code? in the sign-in panel, enter the code. Credits land instantly and are theirs for good. The wider picture of what you can and cannot gift is here.
