Do gifted ChatGPT credits expire?

August 31, 2026

Yes, on two separate clocks. Per OpenAI's documentation, an unclaimed claim link expires 30 days after purchase and is refunded, and once redeemed the credits expire 12 months later with no roll-over. If you are buying ahead of a birthday or the holidays, the 30-day clock is the one that catches people. A nixm gift code has no clock on either end.

The two clocks, plainly

OpenAI's help documentation sets out both. The first runs from purchase: if nobody claims the gift within 30 days, the link expires and the purchase is refunded to the original payment method. The second runs from redemption: gifted credits expire 12 months after they are redeemed, and unused credits do not roll over once they lapse.

They are independent. Claiming quickly does not extend the year, and a fast redemption simply starts the second clock sooner.

Why the 30-day one is the trap

Because gifts get bought early. Buying a present in early November for late December is completely ordinary behaviour, and it is exactly the behaviour this clock punishes — the link would expire before the occasion it was bought for.

The refund does soften it: an unclaimed gift returns to your card automatically. But a refund is not a present. You would find out the gift had evaporated either when the money reappeared or when the recipient tried a dead link, and neither of those happens at a convenient moment.

Buying ahead therefore means buying the link and sending it immediately, then relying on the recipient to redeem within the month — even if the occasion has not happened yet. That is a strange shape for a gift.

The part that surprises people about the year

A 12-month usage window sounds generous, and for a heavy user it is. But credits are not the main course — OpenAI's own explanation is that a plan's included usage is spent first, and credits cover eligible usage after an included limit is reached. So a casual recipient may barely touch them, precisely because their plan is doing the work.

Which produces the awkward outcome: the lighter the user, the more likely the gift quietly expires unused. The people most likely to lose the value are the ones who needed it least — but they are also the ones you were most likely buying it for.

Two other edges worth knowing

Your existing balance is not giftable. OpenAI states that existing credit balances are non-transferable and cannot be resold or gifted, so a gift is always a fresh purchase rather than a share of what you already have.

And the claim link behaves like a bearer token. Adding a recipient's email does not reserve the gift for that address, anyone with the complete link may be able to redeem it, and a generated link cannot be cancelled. The full flow is in how to gift ChatGPT credits.

What no expiry looks like

A nixm gift code has neither clock. The code does not expire while it waits to be given, so buying in October for December is a normal thing to do. And the credits do not expire once redeemed — three videos this month and two next spring is fine, because nothing is counting down.

CA$24.99 buys 100 chat credits and 5 cinematic video credits with sound. It is the same principle that runs through everything nixm charges for: credits you bought are credits you keep, and there is no plan underneath deciding what gets spent first. The wider argument is in what "unlimited" and expiring credits really mean.

frequently asked

Do gifted ChatGPT credits expire?

Yes. Per OpenAI, redeemed credits expire 12 months after the redemption date, and unused credits do not roll over.

What happens if nobody claims the gift?

The claim link expires 30 days after purchase and the purchase is refunded to the purchaser's original payment method.

Can I buy a ChatGPT gift months in advance?

Not comfortably. The claim link only lasts 30 days from purchase, so buying well ahead of an occasion risks it expiring before the gift is given.

Does claiming early give me longer to use the credits?

No. The 12-month window starts at redemption, so claiming sooner starts the clock sooner.

Can I gift credits from my existing balance?

No. OpenAI states existing credit balances are non-transferable and cannot be resold or gifted — a gift is a separate prepaid purchase.

Is there an AI gift that does not expire?

Yes — a nixm gift code has no claim window and no usage clock. CA$24.99 for 100 chat credits and 5 cinematic video credits with sound.
