Does ChatGPT record your conversations?

August 20, 2026

Your typed conversations are stored on OpenAI's servers by default, can be used to improve models unless you opt out, and have been produced to litigants under court order. Voice mode transcribes what you say. nixm records none of it — the conversation is never written down.

Three questions hiding in one word

"Recording" carries a surveillance flavour that "saving" doesn't, and people asking it usually want one of three answers: is a human listening right now, is this being used to train something, and can it be pulled up later by someone else. Those have different answers.

Is someone listening?

Not live, in the eavesdropping sense. What exists is systematic: conversations stored under your account, accessible to the company's systems and to authorized staff under its policies. Voice conversations are transcribed — speaking instead of typing doesn't make a chat ephemeral, it adds an audio step before the same storage.

Is it training on me?

By default on consumer tiers, conversations can be used to improve models unless you opt out in settings. Business and enterprise tiers have different defaults — one reason which account you're using matters more than most people think.

Can it be pulled up later?

This is the one that turned out to matter. Court filings described OpenAI retaining tens of billions of consumer chat logs, and in January 2026 a court upheld an order producing 20 million de-identified conversations to opposing lawyers. Sam Altman has said plainly that conversations with ChatGPT carry no legal privilege. Stored means reachable — by process, not by hackers. Who can read what.

The version with nothing to pull up

nixm doesn't write the conversation anywhere. Not to train, not to store, not to produce under order — there is no log, because the log was never created. A small distilled signal persists and dissolves in seven days. Compare the retention timelines.
