What is an AI agent? A chatbot answers; an agent does the task

October 14, 2026

A chatbot answers one message at a time. An AI agent is given a goal and works toward it on its own: it breaks the job into steps, uses tools (search, a browser, your files, code), looks at what came back, adjusts, and continues until it is done or stuck. "Research this and write me a report", "book the cheapest flight that fits", "fix the failing tests" are agent jobs. The upside is that work happens while you are away; the risk is that mistakes happen while you are away too.

The one-line difference

Ask a chatbot "what are the best flights to Lisbon in March" and you get a paragraph. Ask an agent the same and it opens a flight site, searches, compares, maybe asks you one question, and comes back with three options it actually found, or books one if you told it to. The model underneath can be the same. The difference is the loop: an agent is allowed to act, see the result, and act again.

What makes something an agent

  • A goal, not a message. You describe the outcome. The agent decides the steps.
  • Tools. It can do things beyond writing text: search the web, open pages, read and write files, run code, call another service, send a message.
  • A loop. Act, observe, decide, act again. The observe step is what lets it recover from a dead end instead of guessing.
  • Some autonomy. It keeps going without you for a while: a few steps, or an hour.
  • A stopping rule. Done, stuck, or "I need you to decide this one".

"Agents in artificial intelligence" is also an older textbook phrase for any system that perceives and acts in an environment, from a thermostat upward. The 2026 meaning is narrower: a language model running that loop with real tools.

Where agents work today

  • Research. Given a question, the agent runs many searches, reads the sources, cross-checks and writes a cited report. This is the most reliable kind, because the worst failure is a bad paragraph rather than a bad purchase. nixm's deep research works this way: up to six threads search and read in parallel, and a writer assembles the result with sources.
  • Coding. An agent reads a codebase, makes a change, runs the tests, reads the failure, fixes it, repeats. Developers already hand these multi-hour tasks.
  • Browser tasks. Fill in the form, compare the listings, pull the figures from twelve pages into a table. Works, with supervision.
  • Back-office chains. Read the invoice, match it to the order, flag the mismatch, draft the email. The boring, structured, high-volume jobs.

Where they fail

Agents inherit every limitation of the model and add a new one: errors compound. A chatbot's wrong answer is one wrong answer. An agent's wrong step at minute two shapes everything after it, and it will report success in the same confident tone. The common failures are going in circles, picking a plausible but wrong tool result, spending money or sending messages you would not have, and getting manipulated by text on a web page that was written to hijack it. Good agent products limit the blast radius: they ask before anything irreversible, show their work, and run in a sandbox.

Before you let one act for you

  1. Match the autonomy to the cost of a mistake. Research and drafts: let it run. Money, messages, deletions: it asks first, every time.
  2. Give it the goal and the constraints, not the steps. "Under 400 dollars, direct flights only, not the 6 am one" beats a procedure.
  3. Read the trace, not just the result. What it did is as important as what it found.
  4. Know what it keeps. An agent that reads your files, your email or your browser sees a lot. Ask where that goes. nixm's answer is the same as for chat: no transcript kept, nothing trained on, and the work sits in a signal that dissolves after seven days.

Agents and more than one person

The next shape is an agent that works for a group: one that holds what the team decided and carries on with whoever shows up next. That is what a nixm signal does in miniature: the AI keeps the decisions, each person talks to it privately, and the shared work is there for whoever opens it next. The collaboration article walks through it.

frequently asked

What is an AI agent in simple terms?

An AI that is given a goal and works toward it on its own: it plans steps, uses tools such as search, a browser or code, checks the results and keeps going until the job is done or it needs you.

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers one message at a time. An agent acts, observes the result and acts again, so it can complete multi-step tasks like researching and writing a report or fixing failing code.

What are examples of AI agents?

Deep research tools that search many sources and write a cited report, coding agents that edit and test code until it passes, browser agents that fill forms and gather data, and back-office agents that process invoices or tickets.

Are AI agents safe to use?

For research and drafting, yes. For anything that spends money, sends messages or deletes things, use one that asks before acting, shows its steps and runs in a sandbox, because agent errors compound.

Do AI agents replace people?

They take over structured multi-step tasks and leave the goal-setting, the judgement and the responsibility with a person. See the article on which jobs AI replaces.

Does nixm have AI agents?

Its deep research mode is one: up to six threads search and read in parallel and a writer assembles a sourced report. The result lives in a signal that keeps no transcript and dissolves after seven days.
