How does ChatGPT work? From your message to its answer

October 14, 2026

ChatGPT is a chat interface on top of a large language model, a neural network trained on a vast amount of text to predict the next word. When you send a message, the model reads the whole conversation so far and generates its reply one small piece at a time, each piece chosen because it is likely given everything before it. It was tuned with human feedback to answer helpfully, and it can call tools like web search and code. It does not look things up in a database of facts, which is why it can be fluent and wrong at once. Your messages are kept by OpenAI unless you use the data controls.

The parts

  • The model. A large language model from the GPT family: hundreds of billions of internal numbers set by training on a large share of the public web, books and code. The LLM page explains what that is.
  • The tuning. After the base training, people wrote example conversations and rated the model's replies, and the model was adjusted toward the preferred ones. That is what turned a text-continuer into an assistant that answers, follows instructions and refuses some things.
  • The chat wrapper. The text box, your conversation history, the memory feature, and the tools: web search, code execution, file reading, image generation. The model decides when to call them.

What happens when you press enter

  1. Your message is added to the conversation so far, plus hidden instructions from OpenAI about how to behave, plus anything the memory feature has stored about you.
  2. All of that text is turned into tokens, the pieces (roughly word-parts) the model reads.
  3. The model produces a probability for every possible next token, picks one, adds it, and repeats. Thousands of times for a long answer. This is why the reply streams in word by word: that is literally how it is being made.
  4. If the model decides it needs a tool, it writes a request (a search query, some code), the system runs it, and the result is fed back as more text for the model to continue from.
  5. The finished reply is shown to you and saved to your chat history.

Why it sounds confident when it is wrong

Because every token is chosen for being likely, and the model has no separate store of verified facts to check against. If the most plausible next piece after "the study by" is a plausible-sounding author, it produces one. Its tone does not change with its accuracy. Web search helps when it is used, because then the model is reading a real page rather than reciting. For anything that matters, ask for the source and open it.

What it remembers

Three different things, often confused. Within a conversation, it reads everything so far, up to a limit, so it can follow the thread. Across conversations, the memory feature can store facts about you that it then reads every time; you can see and delete those. And on OpenAI's side, your conversations are stored on its servers by default and can be used to train future models unless you turn that off. The does ChatGPT save my conversations page goes through the storage; the is ChatGPT private page covers the settings.

How it compares to other chatbots

Claude, Gemini, Copilot and the rest are the same shape: a large language model, tuned, wrapped in a chat with tools. They differ in the engine, the tuning, the tools and what they keep. nixm is the same shape too, with one deliberate difference in the wrapper: it keeps no transcript, trains on nothing you say, and the conversation dissolves after seven days, so the "what it remembers" section above has a much shorter answer.

frequently asked

How does ChatGPT work in simple terms?

It is a large language model trained to predict the next word, tuned with human feedback to answer helpfully, and wrapped in a chat with tools. Each reply is generated piece by piece, each piece chosen because it is likely given the conversation so far.

Does ChatGPT search the internet?

It can, when the model decides a search is needed or you ask for one. Otherwise it answers from what it learned in training, which has a cut-off date.

Why does ChatGPT give wrong answers?

It produces likely text, not verified facts, and its tone does not change when it is wrong. Ask for sources and check them for anything that matters.

Does ChatGPT remember previous conversations?

Within a chat it reads everything so far. Across chats, its memory feature can store facts about you, which you can view and delete. Separately, OpenAI stores your conversations on its servers by default.

Does ChatGPT learn from my conversations?

By default your chats can be used to train future models unless you turn that off in the data controls. The model you are talking to does not update itself during the conversation.

Is ChatGPT the same as an LLM?

ChatGPT is a product built around an LLM. The LLM is the engine; the chat interface, memory, tools and rules are the rest of the car.
