Animate old photos with AI — gently, and honestly

October 9, 2026

Scan the photo at high resolution, crop to the people, and describe one small, natural movement — a smile, a glance, a breeze — then render it as a short clip. Face-animation apps move a face in place; image-to-video moves the whole scene and can add sound. Either way the AI invents what the photo never showed, so treat the result as a portrait brought to life, not footage. On nixm an HD clip is eight seconds with sound, your first one is free, and the photo you upload dissolves with the signal after seven days.

Two ways to animate an old photo

Tools that "bring photos to life" do one of two different things, and it helps to know which you want before you start.

  • Face animation. The face moves in place: a blink, a turn of the head, a smile. MyHeritage made this popular in 2021 with Deep Nostalgia, which applied pre-recorded gestures to faces in old photos. The background stays still and there is no sound.
  • Image to video. The whole photo becomes the first frame of a short clip. People can move, leaves can stir, light can change, and newer models generate sound with it. You describe what happens instead of picking a preset.

Face animation is quick and predictable. Image to video is closer to a moment recovered: the street outside, the wind, the room.

Prepare the photo

  • Scan, don't photograph the photo. A flatbed scan at 600 dpi or more gives the model real detail. A phone snapshot of a print adds glare and blur that the animation will exaggerate.
  • Crop to the people. Cut away the album border and any empty space; faces should fill a good part of the frame.
  • Keep it as it is. Black and white is fine. Image-to-video usually keeps the look of the photo, so the clip tends to stay in its era.
  • Pick clear faces. Front-facing, in focus and well lit animates best. A group shot of tiny faces will come back soft.

Describe something small

The most moving results are the quietest. Big motion — dancing, walking off frame — forces the model to invent a lot of what it never saw, and that is where faces drift. Prompts that work:

  • "She smiles and glances toward the camera, a light breeze in her hair."
  • "He looks up from the newspaper and laughs, distant street sounds."
  • "The couple turn to each other, slow push in, soft wind in the trees."

Describe only what changes; the model can already see who is there. The general method is in image to video AI, and how the sound is generated in text to video with sound.

What the AI makes up

Be clear-eyed about this, especially with photos of people who have died. The model fills in everything the photo doesn't contain: the inside of a smile, the side of a face that was turned away, how a person actually moved. It is a plausible guess, not a memory. Sometimes it is uncanny in the good sense; sometimes a face drifts toward someone else. If it doesn't look like them, change the prompt to ask for less motion rather than more.

When you share it, say it was animated with AI. Relatives deserve to know what they are watching, and a clip that passes for real footage of a grandparent is a different thing from a portrait brought to life.

Where your family photos end up

An old family photo is personal data, often about people who can no longer say yes or no. Before uploading, check what the service keeps: many store uploads in a gallery or library indefinitely, tied to your account. nixm doesn't keep a transcript. A distilled log of the session stays with the signal for seven days, then dissolves, along with any images you uploaded. Download the clip you want to keep; the source photo doesn't stay behind.

Try it on one photo

Open the cinematic studio, attach the scan and ask nixm to animate this photo, with the one small moment you want. An HD clip takes about two minutes, arrives with sound, and your first one is free on a new account. For a holiday version, see a Christmas video greeting from one photo.

frequently asked

How do I animate an old photo with AI?

Scan it at high resolution, crop to the people, and describe one small natural movement such as a smile or a glance, then render it as a short clip. Image-to-video tools move the whole scene and can add sound; face-animation apps move only the face.

Can AI animate black and white photos?

Yes. Image-to-video usually keeps the look of the photo, so a black and white picture tends to stay black and white.

Is the animated video accurate?

No. The model invents everything the photo doesn't show, including how the person moved. Treat it as a portrait brought to life, not real footage, and say it was AI-animated when you share it.

Why does the face change when the photo is animated?

Large motion forces the model to invent more of the face. Ask for smaller, slower movement and a clear, front-facing photo for a closer likeness.

What happens to the family photos I upload?

It depends on the service; many keep uploads in a library tied to your account. On nixm, images you upload dissolve with the signal after seven days, along with the session's distilled log.

Can I animate an old photo for free?

Your first HD video with sound is free on a new nixm account. An HD clip is eight seconds and takes about two minutes.
