AI plot generator: premises, turns, endings and backstory, with prompts that work

November 4, 2026

A plot generator is most useful before you write a word: ask for twenty premises and pick one, then ask for the five turns that get it from opening to ending, then ask for three endings and choose. Quick generators (Perchance, Toolbaz) do this instantly with no account; the assistants do it better with an account; nixm does it with no account and no transcript kept. The prompts below get results you can actually use; the backstory section covers the one thing plot generators are best at and writers most misuse.

What a plot generator is for

Not for writing the story. For choosing. The expensive part of starting a story is committing to one idea out of the fog, and a generator is cheap at producing twenty candidates you can hold next to each other. Used that way, it is a decision tool. Used as a writing tool it produces the plot everyone else got.

Premises: ask for twenty, keep one

Prompt: "Give me twenty one-sentence story premises in [genre]. Each must name a protagonist, a concrete want, and the thing in the way. No chosen ones, no prophecies, no amnesia." Read the list for the one that produces a second thought in you; that is the premise. Quick generators will give you one premise at a time; the assistants and nixm give you the list.

Turns: the five beats between the opening and the end

Prompt: "For this premise: [paste]. Give me five turning points, in order, where each one makes the protagonist's situation worse in a way that follows from the last. No coincidences after the first." The rule about coincidences is the whole trick; a plot that turns on luck is the one a generator produces by default.

Endings: ask for three, choose the one that costs something

Prompt: "Three endings for this story. One where they get what they wanted and it is not enough. One where they do not get it and it is right. One where they get something else. One paragraph each." The one that makes you uncomfortable is usually the one.

Backstory: the thing to generate and then hide

Backstory generators are popular because backstory is fun to invent and dull to read. Generate it freely: "Write a one-page backstory for [character]: where they grew up, the one event that made them who they are, the thing they have never told anyone." Then keep almost all of it off the page. You need to know it so the character behaves consistently; the reader needs to feel it, not be told it. The dialogue craft that lets backstory leak through what people do not say is in the dialogue page.

Where to run these prompts

Perchance and Toolbaz have story and prompt generators that run with no account; they return one result per run, so the "twenty premises" method does not work there. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini take the prompts as written, with an account and stored history. nixm takes them as written with no account to start, holds the premise through the session rather than re-reading a transcript, and keeps no transcript of what you type; a distilled log lasts seven days, then dissolves. You can start without an account; credits are bought once and never expire. If the plot is for a story about your own life, that last part is the reason to pick it. The full comparison is in AI story generators compared.

From plot to a first image

Once the premise and the first turn exist, the opening is a picture: where the protagonist is when we meet them. On nixm that picture can be composed and rendered as an 8-second shot with sound, which is a fast way to find out whether the opening has any charge before you write ten pages toward it. How that works.

Start with twenty premises

Open nixm, paste the first prompt, and pick one. No sign-up, no saved history, no transcript kept.

frequently asked

What is the best AI plot generator?

For a single random plot, Perchance or Toolbaz with no account. For a list you can choose from and refine, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or nixm, which needs no account and keeps no transcript.

How do I get a plot that is not a cliche?

Ask for twenty premises and pick one, ban chosen ones and prophecies and amnesia, require that every turn follows from the last with no coincidences after the first.

Is there a free AI backstory generator?

Yes. Any of the tools above will write a one-page backstory from the prompt on this page. Generate it fully, then keep most of it off the page.

Can an AI plot generator write the whole story?

It can draft one, but its strength is helping you choose a premise, the turns and an ending. Writing from that outline is where the story becomes yours.

Which plot generator does not store my ideas?

nixm keeps no transcript of what you type; the session holds a distilled log for seven days and then dissolves. The assistants store conversations by default.

What is a story prompt generator?

A tool that gives you a premise or a first line to write from. The premise prompt on this page does the same with more control.
