No-log AI — how to read the claim like a skeptic

No-log is a marketing phrase covering four different architectures: encrypted storage, local storage, anonymized retention, and delete-on-schedule. Why "no logs" needs decoding

Because the phrase migrated from VPNs to AI carrying its ambiguity with it. In practice, tools saying no-log mean one of: we store it encrypted so we can't read it (Proton Lumo's zero-access model), we don't store it — your browser does (Venice's local storage), we store usage anonymized (Duck.ai's model, per its help pages), or we delete it after a window (temporary modes, 30 days on ChatGPT, ~72 hours on Gemini per the vendors). The four questions that sort any claim

Does a record exist? If yes — encrypted, local, or anonymized — everything else is qualifications on a record. Where does it live? Company servers can be compelled; your browser can be seized or synced; anonymized stores can be re-identified badly. Who can read it? Zero-access encryption answers "only you," policy-gated storage answers "us, under rules." For how long? Windows are real: a court froze OpenAI's deletion schedule for months, proving retention periods are also legal-exposure periods.

What the strongest claims still concede

The record. Even the best storing architectures — and Proton's is genuinely strong — protect a conversation that exists. Existence is the exposure: ciphertext persists, keys can be lost, laws change, and a stored corpus is forever a target. The 2025-26 OpenAI litigation demonstrated the ceiling from the other side: only the zero-retention API tier escaped preservation entirely, because nothing was logged to preserve.

The fifth answer: never stored
