Can Copilot make videos? Not anymore — here's what happened

September 16, 2026

Not right now. Copilot never rendered video itself — it handed the request to OpenAI's Sora, first through Bing Video Creator in 2025 and then through Sora 2 inside Microsoft 365 Copilot Create. OpenAI discontinued Sora's consumer service in April 2026, and Microsoft's own admin notices say the Sora video experience in Copilot Create was retired between mid and late June 2026, with "a new video experience in development." Nothing has replaced it yet. If what you want is a clip from a sentence, nixm does that today, pay-per-clip, first one free.

So can it or can't it?

As of September 2026, no. Copilot can write you a script, a shot list and a voiceover, and it can describe a scene as well as anything. It does not turn any of that into a video file. That is a change — for about a year it could, and a lot of guides still say so.

What Copilot used to do

Two things, both borrowed. In June 2025 Microsoft launched Bing Video Creator, a free tool inside the Bing app that generated five-second vertical clips using OpenAI's Sora model — ten fast generations per user, mobile first, later folded into Copilot. Then at Ignite in November 2025, Microsoft brought Sora 2 into Microsoft 365 Copilot Create for commercial customers in its Frontier program, with voiceovers, music and brand-kit elements layered on top. For business users on the right plan, "make me a video" in Copilot genuinely worked.

What happened

The model underneath went away. OpenAI discontinued Sora's app and web experience on April 26, 2026, with the API following on September 24. Bing Video Creator ran on that consumer path. And per Microsoft's own Microsoft 365 admin notices, the Sora video generation experience in Copilot Create was retired between mid and late June 2026. Existing videos remain accessible; new ones cannot be made. Microsoft's stated reason was "ongoing investment in next-generation video capabilities," and its stated plan is that "a new video experience is in development and will be communicated when available." As of this writing, it has not been.

Does upgrading to Copilot Pro or Microsoft 365 Copilot fix it?

No. This is not a feature that moved behind a higher tier — it was removed from the tiers that had it. Paying more today buys more Copilot, not video. When Microsoft ships the replacement it may well be plan-gated, but nobody outside Microsoft knows what it is or when, and any guide telling you to upgrade for video access predates June.

Can Copilot animate an image?

Not currently. Image-to-video ran through the same Sora path and went with it. If starting from a frame is the point, the image-to-video workflow is worth understanding on its own, because the frame you start from decides most of what comes back regardless of which tool animates it.

The same question, other assistants

Copilot is the third major assistant to lose video this year. ChatGPT lost it when Sora's consumer service ended. Claude never had it. Gemini, Grok and Meta AI still make video, because each runs its own model rather than renting Sora. The pattern on the other side is the same each time: the chat interface was the doorman, a separate model was the filmmaker, and when the filmmaker left the doorman kept the job title.

What you can use today

The thing people were asking Copilot for — type what you see, get a filmed clip back with sound — exists, just not there. nixm runs Veo-class generation inside a conversation: describe the moment, compose the still frame together, approve it, and the clip renders with dialogue, score and ambience in about two minutes. One credit for HD, and credits never expire — which, after watching two assistants lose their video feature mid-subscription, is the part worth caring about.

frequently asked

Can Microsoft Copilot generate videos?

Not as of September 2026. It generated video through OpenAI's Sora until Microsoft retired that experience in June 2026, per its Microsoft 365 admin notices. A replacement is described as "in development."

Did Copilot ever make videos?

Yes. Bing Video Creator (June 2025) made five-second Sora clips, and Sora 2 was added to Microsoft 365 Copilot Create in November 2025 for Frontier-program customers.

Why did Copilot lose video generation?

OpenAI discontinued Sora — the app and web service on April 26, 2026, the API on September 24. Microsoft retired the Sora experience in Copilot Create between mid and late June 2026.

Will Copilot Pro or Microsoft 365 Copilot get video back?

Microsoft says a new video experience is in development but has not announced what it is, when, or which plans will include it. Upgrading today does not restore video.

Can Copilot turn an image into a video?

Not currently. Image-to-video ran through the same retired Sora path.

Which AI assistants can still make videos?

Gemini (Google's own models), Grok (xAI's Grok Imagine) and Meta AI (free, via Vibes). ChatGPT and Copilot lost video with Sora's shutdown; Claude never had it. Dedicated tools like nixm render from a conversation without a subscription.

Can I try an alternative free?

Yes — a new nixm account includes one free HD video with sound, no card required.
